Venue Won’t Let Us Move Furniture

Kathryn, on October 5, 2023 at 8:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 4
I recently learned that in the venue we rented they will not allow us to move the furniture that existing in a space. This was never written in our contract or clarified prior to booking the venue.

The venue mentioned that the entity that the subcontract through has it stated in their contract, but that was not written in ours.
I would like to know if they are just saying we cannot or can we push back and indicate that since it’s not stated in the contract for me then we can move the furniture. Or how would other people approach the situation?

Legally, I have no idea…but before you make too big of a deal about it…think about the possible consequences. I wouldn’t want to be at odds with my venue. They can make your life very difficult. Do you feel like the furniture has to be moved in order for the space to work for you? Again, just my thoughts before any unnecessary strife is created. Good luck!

Even if you try to argue with them which I don't suggest, they are bound to the contract they signed which states that furniture won't be moved so they will not agree to let you move the furniture because they would be breaking their contract. Did you ask about the furniture being moved prior to signing your contract or did you just assume you'd be allowed to move it? If you just assumed and didn't specifically ask the question that makes it kind of your own fault for assuming. And you've now learned why it's important to ask questions. If you did ask and they told you that you could then that's obviously a problem, but nothing can really be done about it since like stated before they shouldn't be agreeing to allow you to move furniture they don't have permission to move. At this point I think you have two options. The first option just work with the furniture where it is and if that's not possible then the second option would be to find a different venue.

Unfortunately, if they are under contractual obligation to leave the furniture where it is, I don’t see any negotiations about that being successful. I would just try to find a way to make it work with the furniture where it is.

I agree that if they’re contractually obligated not to move furniture, they need to put that in their contract with you. Unfortunately that just gives you justification to break the contract without penalty, not to say “we get to move furniture now.” If it won’t work without the furniture moved, you’ll have to find a new venue. If you can make it work, maybe use the hassle it will cause to try to get the venue to give you a discount on the final price or something. Good luck!
