Venue Won't Reschedule or Refund Money

Monica, on December 28, 2020 at 7:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

As the COVID rates raged, many of our guests were concerned about flying and we would have to fly too because my fiance has been temporarily transferred for work. He didn't want to travel. His parents also can't enter the United States now and would miss the wedding. We wanted to postpone our wedding for a second time, but the venue in Austin, TX refused. They said either continue with the wedding or cancel without a refund. Even the.medical director at my company was urging people not to travel and stay home. Now we've paid thousands of dollars for nothing. All our vendors except for the venue were willing to work with us. Does anyone have recommendations on how to get our hard earned money back? I was already sad to postpone once, but losing all that money makes it worse.

This will really depend on your contract and what it says about postponing/cancelling especially due to a Force Majeure event.
The only issue is that Texas doesn’t have many restrictions so if you’re legally allowed to have the wedding with the number of people listed in your contract, then you might not have a legal ground to stand on.
    Consult a lawyer if needed

Unfortunately this also happened to me, and I am starting to see more and more posts like it. You can certainly sue, but ultimately my now husband and I decided not to. We figured it would make us feel worse to drag it out and we’d be out even more money since even though they were wrong there was no guarantee we’d get all our money back. We decided to have a backyard party instead and compared to how much some people spend on weddings, we did not spend an extreme amount even before Covid. Leave them several scathing reviews and theres also ways to report bad business practices. Sometimes thats more effective and less costly than getting a lawyer involved

Honestly a buddy from here had the same issue with her venue in Texas and if the contract does not allow for refunds, especially if your state is in lockdown, you probably won't get the money back. I am sorry and I understand...Florida is the same. Some venues right now do not want to postpone or refund even due to the warnings. Any way you can still use the venue for a smaller wedding? My friend could not get out of her contract so she did a minimony at the venue not to lose out the money but cut other facets of the wedding such as catering.

Does your venue say anything about cancelling or refunds? That's the first place I would check

Unfortunately, I believe Texas doesn't have a lot of restrictions so if your venue is allowed to host events of the size you are planning and you choose to cancel then that's on you. My recommendation is to read your contract to see what the cancellation policy is in the event you choose to cancel your wedding.
