VERY NWR- anyone had mono?

Mrs. Jayjohn, on February 15, 2011 at 3:49 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 15

What were you're symptoms? I'm on my second sinus infection in two months and am a little worried that there is something else going on with my body that's making me sick or so susceptible to bugs. My abdomen hurts and my throat is so swollen I can't hardly talk and when I try I start coughing. I have a headache that I haven't been able to get rid of and when I try to eat I get nauseous (I haven't eaten all day) I plan on going home and having DH take me to urgent care.

That's not mono. That's being sick! I'd think you have a cold or the flu. You get nauseous becuase your stomach acid is out of whack- because you haven't eaten. Try eating some carbs to absorb the acid and having some sprite or giner ale.

Do you have allergies? Sometimes a sinus infection starts from allergies and spreads to the rest of the ENT system.

Sounds like you need an anitbiotic and some probiotics. Most of the immune system is in the stomach- so probiotics can help keep that in balance too.

I had mono about 4 years ago. When I had mono it was like a VERY bad cold that I just couldn't get rid of. Stuffy nose, fever, cough, sore throat and I felt exhausted all the time (even when I got plenty of sleep). I had it for over a month.

I made the mistake of visiting webmd....

I'm never sick so to be sick twice in two months is not the norm.

Marti: that's about how I feel.

Been there done that, got the t-shirt. I have had mono so many times that I have lost count. Those all sound like symptoms also I was really really tired. I mean wanting to nap all the time! I also had a fever one of the times, but the throat thing and not keeping food down was one of the biggies. You could just have the flu there is a bad bug going around. The best bet head to the doctors and get checked out

I had mono about 4 or 5 years ago and I found out because I was out of breath going up a single flight of stairs, had a fever and cold symptoms, and was sleepy and tired all the time. I had it bad, to the point that I had to drop a semester because I couldn't stay awake for class and I was ill for about 2 or 3 months, ugh..

If you think it is mono, the doc can order a mono-spot test, is it a simple blood test that will confirm if you have mono.

It is common to catch a cold (virus) and your body spends so much energy fighting it off you can sometimes end up with a secondary bacterial infection (they can be sneaky that way) and it usually occurs 1-2 weeks after the cold has begun.

Go to the doctor, and get the mono spot test just to make sure.

The most common symptoms of mono are: Fever, which may range from 101°F to 104°F, and chills, Sore throat, often with white patches on the tonsils (which may look like strep throat), Swollen lymph nodes all over the body, especially the lymph nodes in the neck, Swollen tonsils, Headache or body aches, Fatigue and a lack of energy, Loss of appetite, Pain in the upper left part of the abdomen, which may mean that the spleen has become enlarged. These symptoms usually get better in about one or two months. Mono can cause a rash if you take antibiotics such as penicillin, ampicillin, or amoxicillin. These antibiotics are often prescribed for other causes of sore throat, such as strep throat, and might be prescribed for you before the doctor knows you have mono. The rash is not an allergic reaction. Mono may cause your spleen to swell to 2 or 3 times its normal size. Complications of mono are rare but are most likely to develop in very young children & older adults in poor health.

I've had mono and I was just tired, tired, TIRED. I also had a bad sore throat and just felt yucky.

Go to the doctor, but no need for urgent care - call your doctor and get an appointment for sometime in the next couple of days. Just so you know, mono is a virus - and the anti-viral drugs they have won't do much (if anything) for you now. I wasn't given any meds when I had mono, I was just told to rest and limit crazy activity so I didn't rupture my spleen. Don't expect drugs, or much of any treatment besides rest.

Mono can cause a rash regardless of whether you take those antibiotics or not. I had the rash and I am allergic to those antibiotics so naturally I was not taking them. My doctor told me only about 10% of people get the rash...yay me. Like others have said the only treatment I was given was rest rest rest and no harsh activities. I wasn't feeling up to those anyway. It took a year for me to fully get healthy again.

I convinced myself I had all sorts of ailments, by doing internet-self-research.

It sounds like a Dr. can quickly diagnose this, and give you peace of mind.

Some of my internet-self-diagnosis include skin cancer (dermatologist assured me it was a normal mark); damaged lung (it was a pulled muscle around my ribcage that caused me to hurt when I was breathing); cervical cancer (unclear PAP result that came back clear on the second test) but before waiting for the second test result to come back, I went internet-self-diagnosing.

For peace of mind get it checked out, and even, if it is mono, which is probably is not ,you can get on the right treatment path.

Save some money and avoid urgent-care if you can, a Dr. office visit is likely to be cheaper. At all costs avoid the ER unless you have no other option, that can cost a fortune.

Well apparently this past summer I had mono and never knew it!!! I had a horrible sore throat for 2 weeks and my ears were hurting but I thought oh ok I'm sick no biggie. Wrong, I started throwing up one morning and decided to hit the Dr. and yep he confirmed it, I had mono. He said because I had been feeling so bad for so long chances are I was on the downside of things but that my body was just so tired it couldn't fight the symptoms anymore. So I spent a lot of time in bed and was back to normal!!

That's definitely not mono. I had it in middle school, mono just makes you insanely tired, like to the point of not wanting to get out of bed tired, and you just don't wanna do anything.

Mono strikes different people in different ways, I had it a few years ago and had to go on emergency leave from work for almost 4 months (complications caused from mono) but my brother had it about a month ago and is perfectly fine now. For him it was just like a nasty cold. For me it was like hell on earth. It all depends on what kind of immune system you have, and how well you take care of yourself.

No but i presently have pneumonia & don't know where i acquired it. i have my suspicions... as i recently started my new job, i've had to take public transportation so that's the only place i can think of. not very happy about it since i've been out sick for 1 week. thankfully my employer understands, esp since they knew i wasn't feeling well a few weeks ago & i still went to work.

I had mono two years ago and it was one of the worst things I have ever had. Aside from being extremely tired to the point that I barely wanted to get out of bed. I would wake up and within minutes be back asleep. Which for me is very unusual. I had a terrible sore throat, my throat was swollen, I got a bad fever over 100 degrees. If you do have that their is nothing you can take it just basically has to run its course. The plus is that once you have had it you cannot get it again because your body will be immune to it. But you cannot have any physical contact with people because it is very contagious. I had it for well over a month. I had to take four days off from work.
