Vintage Luggage Card Box diy

Maria, on July 2, 2018 at 1:12 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14
Hello!

I would like some ideas / advice for restoring this piece of vintage luggage that I purchased inexpensively. It is a Samsonite luggage in faux crocodile. ( The vinyl is separating from the scenes in a few areas. ) I would like to paint it or even possibly strip the vinul off and paint the frame and use it open as a card box.

I have never done a project like this before so I'm not sure what would be the easiest and best type of paint to use to transform the faux crocodile. I think that the interior is probably a thick cardboard and not wood unfortunately so I'm not sure if it would be worth it to strip the vinyl off the luggage & then paint it .

The interior lining is stained and ripped so I may remove that and reline it. I have seen some tutorials . I would also probably like to paint the brassy hardware as well.

Any advice, pictures or input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Personally I think the charm of vintage is that it looks old so I would leave it as it is, I think it looks fantastic.

How are the top and sides? Those are the only parts that will show, no the bottom.

I agree with the pp. The charm of vintage is that the wear shows. Old suitcases often do have a musty smell which is often gone after the lining is replaced, and that's easy to do..

I mean if you really want to paint it - they sell leather/vinyl restorative paint at auto parts stores. We just used it to refinish our vinyl boat seats and it worked great.

Do you have any tips for easily replacing the liner that he would be willing to share?

Rip out the old lining in one piece and use it for an approximate pattern. I just lay the new fabric in the space, fold down the top edge and staple it in place, starting in the center on each side and working out to the corners the same way as re-upholstering a chair seat, pleating it as necessary as you go.

When you are done, glue on some trim to cover the staples.

Thank you so much! I actually saw a tutorial to spray glue on a paper lining but the fabric is another idea. He'll probably look better

I recommend finding a way you could keep it locked rather than open due to the high risk of theft. While you may trust all your guests (and their guests), you can't always trust the various vendors that will be around that day and having an open suitcase with lots of cards with cash/gift cards inside is just too tempting.

Hey, Maria! This is a great find- so much potential! Smiley heart

I found a couple of cute ideas on Pinterest. One open, and one closed (earias makes a good point, depending on your venue)! Smiley winking

Is there a color that you want to stick to? The PPs are right, a lot of the charm comes from the fact that this piece is a little shabby-chic!

Quick afterthought: If the interior is, in fact, cardboard, you could cut a slot in the side or top to put cards in while keeping it securely closed!

Chris thank you so much. I appreciate all of your effort and time. That's exactly what I was thinking too put like a hidden Shelf with a slot in it on the bottom of the suitcase. I'm a little torn I'd like the full alligator vintage look but I'm not crazy about the color so I'm not sure what to do.

    Hi
i have painted luggage before. Since you won’t be actually using it for it’s inten purpose, I think you could get away with a few paints.
You can spray a primer on it (like rust oleum) and then spray a color (rust oleum) and finish with a topcoat spray.
    OR
You could paint it with chalk paint, and seal with cream wax. Easy peasy.
    OR
I have used a product called “rub n buff” on things (not suitcases) but I think that would give it a nice metallic finish!

Okay so update. After much thought and trying a chalk paint I decided that to take off the faux crocodile as it was splitting all around the luggage anyway. I wasn't able to get the sides off because it appears that it is glued down so I left it. Now I have to figure out what to do. I think that I want to make it a dark color, but I'm not sure how it would look. I am not big on ivory. I definitely something rustic-looking yet on the Vintage side but I am not sure what to do. I believe that the frame of the suitcase is a very heavy cardboard. Any suggestions?
