Vinyl Record Guest Book?

Tasha, on October 28, 2015 at 6:55 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 2 17

My Fiance and I both love music and have a small collection of vinyl records. I am just wondering if anybody has done or thought about having people sign vinyl for the guest book and then get them framed or anything similiar? What are some of the pros and cons?

I've never seen it done, but I'm guessing it would work, get some cool metallic markers... I'm thinking that would be a great idea!

Very cute! just make sure they aren't ones that you care to not play anymore, i second the metallic markers, that'd be awesome

We love going to shows together and our wedding is going to have a big music aspect to it. I just realized the other day that album/song titles would make great table names! I would do it along with a number, just as a cute addition. But you could also make table numbers or other decorative elements with the album artwork. I was thinking about the best way to reproduce it, but they are bulky to be putting in a scanner.

So I definitely think using your vinyl collection to add a personal touch is a big Pro! For a guest book, I think the con is that the album covers and inserts are such a big part of listening to the record that you wouldn't want to write on them. I think reproductions of the album covers would look good in a Shutterfly book or poster that you could have people write on!

Some of our albums did come with posters that would look nice signed and framed.

    That's a fantastic idea!

ETA: definitely use a metalic sharpie that's fairly thick -- you'll want something that's as brush-like as possible to seamlessly write over the ridges of the records

@ZBD+M we would just purchase some thrift store vinyl for cheap that is in decent condition and maybe make a personalized piece for the center to cover the album info if its not our tastes, so we wouldn't have to worry about ruining any of our collection!

@Tasha thanks for explaining, sorry I was confused, my mind just immediately went to album covers instead of albums. That is a cool idea!!

My fiance and I are going to do the same thing for our wedding. We've picked up some albums we like from the thrift store and we're going to use metallic sharpies for the guests to use to sign them. I'm planning on just finding some record frames from a craft store or Ikea. My only concern has been how many records I should get. We're going to have roughly 120 guests and I have 4 records now, but can't decide if we'll need more. How many are you thinking of getting?

@Elisa, we are having roughly 120 guests as well! I think I might purchase 6, but set out 2 at a time (have a guest book attendant) so that they fill up instead of being all spread out. Depending on the cost I may get even 1 or 2 more just to be safe!

Hi! Just curious what type of pen you ended up using? We are wanting to use vinyl records as our guestbook as well and wanted to see what pen would work best. Thanks in advance!!

Awesome! We used metallic sharpies and they worked really well. Just the standard size, not the fine tip ones. Smiley smile

Also, for anyone still looking at this thread, we had 130 guests and filled up 3 records, but people weren't putting messages, just their names.

I want to do this also. If I have about 90 guests do you think 1 record should be enough?

Are you able to just write on the records? Do you have to do anything to prep them?
    such a cool idea!

Hey Kelly! If you just get some metallic sharpie markers, you can write straight on the black vinyl! Just make sure they are clean and you're good to go. It's so easy! I also found it really easy to find square frames and some scrapbooking paper to mount them afterwards.

I've seen these for sell on Etsy $50-$100! Does the sharpie write smoothly on the record? The ones on Etsy say they are coated in a spray with a matte finish, so guests can write on the record without it bleeding/smudging. My guess is that they use an acrylic spray. They also have a personalized label in the center of the record, did you make one of these? If so, how did you go about it?

I personally think it’s cooler to use vintage records of music you both love! But labels you could color print and use a glue stick to adhere them
