Virginia beach for "honeymoon" on a budget?

Holly, on May 1, 2012 at 10:23 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 24

We are thinking about going to virginia beach for a few days after our wedding, neither of us have ever been there and i think we'd have a nice time somewhere like that..we dont have alot of money for a honeymoon. We looked into it, and we could come up with the money for the room, and itd be a 9 hour drive. So we were hoping with the monetary gifts from the wedding we could use some as our spending money there. For anyone thats been there, do you know of any cheap or free things to do there? (Other than the beach, which we will probably spend alot of time at) Cause we will probably have to spend alot on food. TIA!

For me, I'd rather go to Dewey Beach in Delaware than Virginia Beach. Dewey is cleaner and a little less tourist trap-like. Just MHO

I also agree with Rae. I just realized that you are going in August. Things will be so expensive there. Delaware really is a gem.

Unless you're big beach people, I would suggest looking for some options where you don't have to spend as much on a room. Here are a couple ideas:

    1. Charlottesville, VA. UVA has a beautiful campus, plus you could tour some wineries (that's VA wine country), see Monticello, and visit shops and restaurants.
    2. Smoky Mountains, NC. You could go hiking, rafting, and tour some small towns in some really pretty countryside. Gatlinburg is a bit cheesy, but there are some pretty places on the NC side.
    3. DC. I'm a bit prejudiced because I live here, but we've got free museums and monuments, the Kennedy Center has free performances (Wednesday nights, I think) and if you shop around you can usually find some affordable hotel options. Plus we have loads of cultural attractions and great restaurants, live music and bars. I usually send visitors to the Holiday Inn in SW DC (near the museums) or if that's pricy the Hilton Garden Inn in Courthouse, VA.

Well we live in ohio and dont travel much so we were hoping to find some things to do that we wouldnt necessarily be able to do here.. Wed like to do anything really, we just want to make sure we get out and take advantage of having different surroundings than being in Ohio.

The sandbridge area of virginia beach is very nice and peaceful. You dont have all the tourist stuff but you are a quick drive to all the food and fun.

the Outer Banks of North Carolina is nice too.

But, Im looking at your wedding date~we do run the risk of hurricanes in august and sept but 8/12 is kinda early so you might be ok.

DC is an awesome place. FH and I just moved back to VB after a year up there. Ive lived in VB my whole life otherwise

Ok thanks guys! I kind of did have my heart set on beachy areas. I will look into Dewey beach also. We were taking alot of things into consideration like travel time, room rates, and cheap things to do in each area. The only places we could think of were Myrtle beach and virginia beach. Myrtle beach was a couple hours more travel time. I will also contact u girls that live in the va beach area if needed, thank you!

@ Shannon- actually we looked into rooms and we found a decent hotel right by the boardwalk for a little over $100 a night, so i didnt think room rate was too bad. (we plan on staying 3-4 days). Was just wondering if alot of the attractions were super expensive

The only downfall about august is that its towards the end of summer so VB is full of tourists. there are fun things to do, depending what you enjoy. Blair has a good idea of renting a sandbridge home, but it depends how much you are willing to spend. i just did a quick search and the cheapest rental for a week that i could find was around $1200. http://www.sandbridge.com/

If you want, I have a few links of things to do here on my wedding website. just go to my profile and check it out.

Thanks for the ideas everyone! Im really open to anywhere in that area, however i did want to go somewhere close to the beach. Me and FH were just talking about it last night and he said "Youve never had your feet in the ocean? Youve never even seen the ocean??" And its something i really want to do. Lol i guess ive lived a sheltered life!

Blair- i will also look into the sandbridge area. I didnt realize that was still va beach the first time you mentioned it.

DC in August is a sweaty mess - I've lived here a dozen years. I just think it's not THAT bad, and it's a great option if you are looking for a lot of free or low-priced attractions.

I guess i shouldnt have picked an august wedding then haha...

@Shianne- Your ideas on your website are a great help! And i dont think i'd mind all the tourists. As long as we are together and having fun, i dont think id care about anybody else... Well i guess its easy to say that now lol because i dont know how bad it really gets! And i also just realized we are date twins Smiley smile

Yeah we are! LOL and it is crowded, especially in the main resort area but if you were to do sandbridge its not as bad since its a little more secluded of an area. literally one road in and one road out

This area (va beach) does get very touristy that time of year... There's a lodge near by called Great Wolf Lodge that I hear is very nice. It's closer to Williamsburg ( think Busch gardens and water country USA).

Have you thought about the poconos? That would be closer to u and It's not as hot and they have waterfront rentals! It's a very nice area..

The Poconos are really nice and they have plenty of things for you to do there as well. Also included in your room rate is your breakfast and dinner buffet. You have to find your own lunch, but there are plenty of inexpensive places near by.
