For me, I wrote everything down (ended up with a page and a half but I looked over everything and was able to see the important things that I wanted to be said.

The biggest thing that should be covered in your vows are the specific promises that you're making to your partner. "I vow to love and honor you" or "I promise to support you in the difficult times and celebrate with you in the happy times" are some examples. Some of them can be funny or lighthearted if you choose: "I vow to comfort you when your favorite sports team loses" or "I promise to always take selfies with you". I would include at least 3-5 promises, possibly more. You could also include sentences that describe what you love about your partner, and/or reference stories from your relationship (the moment you first knew they were The One, how you met etc). Try to keep the timing around 1-2 minutes. Write your words from your heart, look up examples online for inspiration, and make them personalized to you and your fiance.

I wrote my vows by jotting down random thoughts or general things I wanted to say. I saved all of these in an email draft, and any time I thought of something (regardless of where I was), I would immediately update the draft. Over time, I'd slowly reword sentences, move things around, delete some thoughts, add other thoughts, reword some more, etc., and my vows turned into something that I am super excited to say to my fiance during our ceremony!

The important thing to remember is that your vows are you promises to your partner for the rest of your marriage. The vows are not a love letter. You may have a few lines that are closer to a love letter at the beginning, but the primary thing to remember is to focus on the most important promises you want to make to to your future husband. As Lisa said, they can be a mix of serious and more lighthearted promises.

Yes! Exactly this! I’ve been to a few weddings where the “vows” were basically just the couple telling how they met and what they liked about eachother… sooooo not vows at all LOL You want to think about the promises you are committing to uphold throughout your marriage.

Our officiant helped us with our vows. She reminded us that vows are promises, so they should be a pledge to your commitment. Save the quirks you love about each other for another part of the ceremony.
