Vows

Kerin, on May 20, 2020 at 2:07 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 27

Hi, there! We're writing our own vows. FH is a musician/song writer in his spare time, so I'm envisioning him being all sweet and eloquent and I typically freeze in the spotlight so I'm a bit nervous, but also excited.

Has anyone else done this? Any tips, suggestions for length? Did you go for "funny"?

I have a pretty clear idea of what I want to say, but not sure about the delivery LOL

Thank you, in advance!

I went for funny aha i had romantic too but mostly funny. i think you shouldn't feel pressured to think that yours have to be as good as his or anything like that. just remember that you have a lifetime with him to tell him what and how you feel about him Smiley smile sometimes a 1-3 minute speech isn't enough to capture all you feel ya know?

I just got married May 16 and we both wrote ours. We both put in there how we first met. I put how my husband makes me laugh, is my partner in crime and when I knew he was the one for me. I also put in there what I vow to him: vow to respect, love him through thick n thin, and to love him in this life and the next. My mom recorded our ceremony and it was 7.5 minutes long. Hope this helps!

I’ve seen people’s vows not match up and it’s completely fine. If you are genuine it’ll automatically be sweet. I wouldn’t go longer than 3 minutes. There are some templates online that I tried to make my own and I ended up making it completely different than the template. My husband chickened out and we ended up not reading our own, so I wrote him a letter instead.

Thank you for the advice Mrs. S. I pretty much know what I want to say, and it'll take about 2 minutes, I just am not sure if I should try to make it funny. It's definitely from the heart, I sort of think it'll make his mom tear up a little bit (that being a good thing) because I'm a fairly sentimental person to begin with LOL

Writing a letter is a very nice alternative, too, i'll keep that in mind if my FH changes his mind Smiley smile

We wrote our own vows, I've been practicing mine, every spare minute I have. I too, freeze when the spotlight is on me, so I'm focusing my attention on him. Mine were not funny, except for one small line. Just wrote them from my heart, I am also carrying a "cheat sheet " just in case to keep me on pointSmiley smile
I can finally repeat them without crying, with 16 days to goSmiley smile
Congratulations! He will love them, no matter what you say!🥰❤

We're writing our vows for our wedding in October and I've started mine. I'm going for heartfelt rather than funny, but I don't know about my fiance.

Thank you, Samantha. Did you look online for any inspiration or will yours be more like a letter written to him and read aloud?

A previous response said to put in what you are actually vowing to your FH, and that is how I close mine, so these responses are making me feel like what came naturally while I was writing will be just right...and I needed that affirmation!

Another person said to just speak to FH - and that will probably be the hardest part for me, because of my nerves, but that's what I'm going to have to work on most, and I feel like I'm really going to need the 8 and a half months I have left to practice Smiley xd

I am struggling with my vow. It’s too long, I think, and it’s wayyy too touchy I can’t read it without crying. I don’t want to stop every couple sentences and had to breath normal enough to continue. My dh is not a romantic, so I don’t have any idea what he wrote, maybe something he copy paste or maybe something very short and read it like the news 🤣

I saw this the other day and sometimes I think let me just do this (😆just kidding!)Vows 1

I absolutely looked online! I would say the first half is like a love letter to him and the second half is traditional vows, like "I promise to speak to you and about you with kindness and compassion," but a series of those. The format I found for most of the vows I read or listened to (check out youtube for some inspiration) was 1) introduction, 2) anecdote, 3) actual vows. The problem I have with "just speaking" is that I have so much to say to him so I have to work to make it presentable to an audience. I feel you! I have just under 5 months and I am very much a planner, so I'm glad I've already started working on them. Knowing my fiance, he'll stay up the night before and write his, but he's a procrastinator and I'm a planner.

    Smiley xd that is hilarious

A couple people have said no more than a few minutes, I think. I have a Google doc I keep editing with my vows. I think mine will run about 2 minutes, but I may tear up, too.

Other people are talking about getting emotional with theirs, too...i think the trick is to keep practicing it so we have a snowball's chance... at getting through it without making our eyeliner run Smiley winking

Good luck, hun, and thanks for commiserating!! We've got this, it will be fine Smiley heart

Smiley laugh I feel like my FH will end up writing a song between now and then, and I'll recognize the vows as the chorus or something LOL

I know what you mean about too much to say...I started off by just writing everything down from the heart...two pages later I cropped it down to half Smiley laugh and now it's down to about half a page typed.

thank you for sharing Smiley flower

That's really sweet! I absolutely understand where you're coming from, it's hard to summarize a lifetime of love and commitment into a few hundred words.

My hubby & I actually wrote ours together. But even if you don’t want to do that, it may be nice to coordinate on time/length. We felt 3-4 lines felt right.

We were both so nervous and we didn’t want to be staring down at paper (we wanted to look at each other while saying our vows), we had our officiant say them and asked us to “repeat after me.” It was funny because one of my lines was long and in the middle of it I forgot (so nervous). But everyone giggled, included us.

Aww that is adorable Smiley shame thank you for weighing in and sharing. I keep editing, and I have 8 1/2 months left, so plenty of time to tweak, I hope I don't cry through half of it LOL probably going to be practicing it for a couple months! Smiley heart

Honestly not sure what he has, but he said he's written some. I have 9 sentences...and still tweaking.

My cousin and her wife wrote theirs, and each of them had nearly double mine. It was definitely beautiful, but the vow reading went on for a bit, so I was thinking less would be better...so I'm not "telling a story" or anything. Just trying to keep it sweet, simple, honest, and heart felt.
