Vows

Kelli, on December 30, 2020 at 7:46 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 7
Any tips on working on vows or what are options for things to be said during ceremony. My fiancé and I are going to read each other a letter prior to ceremony because we are private people so was thinking doing more traditional vows with everyone there for ceremony. Plus I would probably cry if we wrote our own and I’m trying to avoid that!

Talk to your officiant. Every state has their own laws on what needs to be said to make it legal. Find out what vow options are that they offer.

We also exchanged letters beforehand which was awesome ❤️ We did traditional vows which felt “right” to us in our situation. For example ours went like this...
“I, Jane Doe take thee John Doe to be my lawfully wedded husband in good times and bad, sickness and in health, in joy and in sorrow for all of our days”. If you have cultural aspects you could incorporate those. I come from a Greek family and incorporated the Greek crowns after our vows. Hope this helps!!

My sister-in-law and her husband exchanged personal vows in private and just said the standard vows in wrote on everyone. If you don't want to read personal vows during your ceremony that's totally fine. Like another person mentioned there are standard vows that each state requires you to say in order to be legally married. So for our wedding we wrote our own vows, but still had to say the standard vows in order for our ceremony to be legally binding.

I recommend you discuss this with the officiant.

This is what we did! We wrote each other notes and read them prior to our first look. For our vows, our officiant actually had some very beautiful vows that we used. I would ask your officiant if they have any suggestions.

You can do the traditional vows and maybe a poem reading that someone else can read that describes your feelings without reading personal vows.
