Walking on incline blasts calories

So I have been following this YouTuber who is prepping for her wedding and noticed one of her slim down videos encouraged walking on the treadmill at a 15 incline with a speed of 3.0-3.3 for 45-50 minutes 5-6 times a week. So I have been following this YouTuber who is prepping for her wedding and noticed one of her slim down videos encouraged walking on the treadmill at a 15 incline with a speed of 3.0-3.3 for 45-50 minutes 5-6 times a week.

I was a bit skeptical but after a run/jog I decided to up the incline as much as I could while keeping a good pace (I only made it to 7 incline) but I was looking at the calories and they were melting off. My heart rate was around 155 too.

How did I not think of this sooner?! I am definitely adding in some incline training to my week and hopefully it helps firm up my legs and butt too.

Anyone else do incline stuff? Any tips?

Walking on an incline is awesome, especially when running is too hard on the knees. It gets my heart rate up even more than running does, just make sure you're constantly challenging yourself. Starting at 15 might be too hard for sure as a PP mentioned. I say just work your way up; you'll find your endurance increases pretty quickly.

@jorocka I think a lot of people just never bothered using that setting and only focus on increasing their speed. That's my assumption lol.

I was just commenting on the calorie burn rate of walking on an incline versus a 2-3 mile jog.

That's what I do if I need to up my calories burned. On cardio days I do 15 incline at 4mph for 40-55 minutes depending how much time I have and then a 6 minute cool down of 2 minutes at 7.5 incline at 3.5mph. 2 minutes at 3.5 incline at 3mph and then 2 minutes at 0incline at 2.5 mph. I usually burn around 600 calories. I'll bring a book or homework with me. Sometimes Netflix on my phone to keep me distracted and it flies by

Man I did it again yesterday and burned like 445 calories in 50 min at 3.3 mph with the highest incline of 10. It was brutal though.

I am baffled at people who can go 15 without holding on.

I like to up the incline for my cool down after running. I feel like I take longer strides and it helps start my stretching before I even get off the treadmill (that might be all in my mind though... if nothing else it burns a few extra calories while I catch my breath)

Another component to a good workout on a machine is switching up speeds/inclines as well. do 3.3 at 10 and then switch to 7 at 2 or 3. Then go back and do other things. The changing up of it gets a GREAT workout going.

This is a good workout but the calorie burn on gym equipment is notoriously unreliable!

Having a good heart rate monitor on helps calculate out how many calories you actually burn in an exercise session.

I hate running at an incline so much!! Walking isn't quite as bad but still sucks. Last week we had "Mount Everest Day" at OTF. It consisted of a run (with no breaks) from 1% to 15% and back down. Who in the world can run at 15%??? Not one person in the class was still running. I switched to walking around 10%.

P.S. NEVER trust what the machine tells you you burned. It usually tells me I burn twice as much as I actually do.

It doesn't count if you hold on.

How many people are holding on and actually believing the machine when it says they burned 900 cals? Don't be this person.

It's always fun to switch up stuff at the gym and feel the difference a small change makes

@Caitlin yeah I used to do the incline cooldowns after a run on the treadmill too. I just wasn't pushing the incline so much.

I have been using my applewatch for more consistent calorie burns, it is just slightly less than what the gym machine tells me. My heart rate stays around 155-160 on incline 7-10.
