Walking to Lose Weight

Mrs.KatieK, on June 16, 2016 at 12:28 AM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 37

With 3 months to go (eep), I'm trying to get my butt moving and to lose a little weight. Mainly because the wedding dress that I bought last summer (and 20 lbs ago) is now rather snug. One thing I've been doing is walking. I walk between 1 and 3 miles a day, depending on how much time I have. Does anyone have tips/tricks for me to get the most out of my walking workout?

Cutting calories and eating healthier foods will make a huge difference. Track every calorie and follow the 80/20 rule.

Add ankle weights. Honestly if you want to lose weight, walking isn't enough.

Definitely add weights and alternate between walking and jogging. Also what made a difference for me was sticking to a 1200 calorie diet, no bread, no pasta, no soda, no fast food. Good luck !

Also with weights and eating a lot less junk food. Substitute 90% of anything you drink with water.

Drink lots of water, and or unsweetened coffee/tea. I cut out processed foods. I've been vegan for a little over a month and I'm down 14lbs. I lift weights 3x a week, and cardio 2x. Starting Monday I will step up my cardio workouts. Good luck!

Calories will do more than exercise. But make sure you eat enough so your body doesn't store the extra fat as nutrients. I have lost 85lbs total, 65 over this past year and a half. Working out is great but it is what you eat.

    Oh and I do yoga.

Cut out sugar! drink water and put in healthy foods. the majority of your fridge should be fresh produce and things of that nature. avoid extra calories by having steamed veggies over a starch like rice or pasta. stop eating out if you do. switch to salad 2/3 times a week if you aren't already. make a killer playlist and get motivated to add some light jogging, skipping, or extra movement to your workout. Smiley smile good luck!

I can't help but roll my eyes a little at these kinds of posts because the solution is always simple: you need to eat cleaner. You will never be able to out walk/run/exercise/etc an unhealthy diet.

I know it depends on timing but you should be walking more than 1-3 miles a day if that's your sole workout. I'd walk 4-5 and walk fast with those arms swinging!

Try jogging a little, even if it's only in 30 second intervals, you gotta get moving and sweating

Eat better. Losing weight is about 75% of what you eat.

I do work out more than walking. It's just something I added to my daily routine to help my weight loss. I'm vegetarian, and have been so for the last 5 years. I live on fruits and veggies, pasta rarely. I've never been into sweets, but do have an occasional handful of chips. I drink a gallon of water a day, and have a cup of coffee in the morning. I've been using the MyFitnessPal app, and stay within 1000 to 1200 calories a day. And, no, I haven't just started this plan in the last week (or whatever small timeframe someone might assume). I seem to be at a plateau and thought adding walking everyday would help.

If you're not seeing the results you were hoping for from adding walking, you can try a walk/jog mix as well. Kind of like the early stages of the Couch to 5K program, walk for say 1 minute then run for 30 seconds. Might give you that little boost you were hoping for!

Katie- Try adding some plyometric workouts to your workout routine. Those always kick my ass!

It looks like you are doing all the right things, although with being vegetarian, I'm sure some of your protein is hard to come by. I'd just assume you need to up your protein. I know a lot of veggies can be high in protein. Check this site out for some suggestions to help with that : https://www.healthaliciousness.com/articles/vegetables-high-in-protein.php

I'm no expert, but I've read and heard from multiple sources that most people need at least 1200 calories per day, otherwise the body goes into "starvation mode" and stores the extra calories (like @Geologygirl said). Try mixing up your workouts and maybe making sure you at least hit that 1200 calorie mark every day.

ETA: To say that even My Fitness Pal will tell you this. If you finalize your day and you are under 1200 calories, it yells at you lol.

Depending on your weight and diet, walking certainly could do the trick if you are overweight by a lot and starting to eat healthy. I lost 110 lbs. I started with by adjusting my food intake and clean eating, then started walking. Eventually as I lost weight I moved on to jogging/walking intervals. Good luck.

Do you walk on a treadmill? If so, I would increase the incline. There are a ton of good walking treadmill work outs available online.

Thank you to all of the positive suggestions and support! I'll definitely try ankle weights (I'm sure I have a pair somewhere...) and adding more running/jogging. Maybe I'll look up some easy-to-remember plyo moves to add in there, too.
