Hi everybody,

I want to have cupcakes for the dessert at my wedding. After pricing out several bakery options, I am seriously leaning towards buying cupcakes at Walmart or a grocery store. I have even found some reasonably priced "cupcake tree platters" on Amazon. By choosing grocery store cupcakes and our own cupcake tree platters, we would slash our dessert budget by two thirds. Has anyone else here done something similar? Any advice? Thanks!

I heard from someone who works at Wal-Mart that Publix is better, though Publix is only a southern store I believe. I have heard good things about Costco, though, if you have one of those by you.

I'm sorry, but no. Your reception should serve as a thank you to your guests. It should be all about them and cupcakes from Walmart, which are notoriously dry with very sweet frosting, is a mistake. If you didn't have the budget, I'd say do the best you can, but you clearly have a dessert budget. If you want to slash something, don't do it on food. Things to slash the budget on include invitations, save the dates, wardrobe, flowers (no one cares about flowers except you and your future spouse), centerpieces, etc. Food and drinks should claim the majority of your wedding budget.

Get whatever cupcakes you want! You could always do a taste-test with your FH to be sure they are a good fit for your day. Icing, cake, and saving some money? Sounds like a good combo to me.

I'm such a baked good snob. I wouldn't do cupcakes from Walmart. I would get sheet cakes from a bakery to save.

@Danielle - "shelf-stable frosting made with shortening that has that nasty mouthfeel"

I mean, honestly, this has put a feeling into appropriate words that I've been unable to describe for many years

@BahneyBride LOL! Thanks so much. I think so many people who claim not to be "cake people" really have been ruined by a lifetime of those nasty grocery store cakes frosted with shortening-based buttercream. Once they've had a cake made by a talented baker--and the frosting is literal buttercream--they've been won over to #TeamCake.

Going back to the original topic, going to a local bakery means supporting local business rather than a faceless corporate megalith that pays its employees so little, they're forced to host food drives to feed their families.

I do agree. I've been introduced as to what true buttercream frosting is (FMIL made it on a birthday birthday) and honestly, there's no going back.

As a former employee of Walmart, I also attest to this "faceless corporate megalith that pays it's employees so little" notion.
