Walmart gift registry? Is it tacky ?

Amanda, on April 13, 2015 at 11:21 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

We weren't planning on doing a gift registry. Mostly because I figured I don't need a bridal shower. Fh and I have lived together for about 4 going on 5 yrs now so I figured a shower wasn't needed. Turns out my mom is dead set on planning one with my moh sister. I'm her first child to marry and she's sickly obsessed with it! She's been awesome about most things and hasn't been over bearing but is bursting with excitement about the wedding so I figured the shower is perfect for her to plan and alleviate some of her pent up enthusiasm. Anyways, I don't want people to spend a lot on gifts. We don't have a target here anymore :'( so that's out! Sears is ok price wise I guess. But walmart is a place where I can make a registry and everyone can spend like $20 tops. I don't want to do it though if people will find it tacky. I'm on the fence. What are your thoughts? What other affordable Canadian places should I consider?

I have a Walmart registry. IMO saving your guest money is far from tacky.

I wouldn't have one because I loathe Walmart, but if it's the only real option then I wold say it is OK. It sucks that you guys lost the Target stores in Canada.

Do you guys have bed bath and beyond? I know that people seem to like working with them for registries.

I don't think a walmart registry is any more tacky than any other. Do they carry the type of stuff that you would want? If they don't, don't register there.

I think it's up to you where you want to register. If you made a Walmart registry, I would go shopping at Walmart. If you registered at some expensive place, I'd go shopping at some expensive place (while probably grumbling a bit about how expensive everything is..) Honestly, if people judge you for having a "cheap" registry, you don't need that kind of negativity in your life. Smiley laugh

Don't look at me; I've been boycotting Wal-mart since 2003.

BB&B would be better than Walmart. It's still cheap but in Canada Walmart is seen as a bit of a tacky store in my opinion. BB&B would go over well. In the end though I would never judge someone for registering at Walmart, I would just wonder why they would pick a place like that (I loathe walmart as well if you can't tell).

Monica - we are crushed that target is gone! My 5 yo daughter cried giant alligator tears when she found out! We have been target lovers since they showed up and loved their stuff! It does suck because that's exactly where I'd have registered. I'm not crazy about walmart stuff, but, it's affordable and easy on guests. BBB may be a good option. I've never been there honestly lol guess I need to invest some time figuring out what to put on the registry and go from there! Thanks gals!

You should register where you want to register plain and simple. If Wal-Mart has what you're looking for then go for it. But it sounds like you're embarrassed by the thought of it and if it's going to be a point of stress for you I'd pick somewhere else. I agree with @Julia T though, trying to save your guests money is sweet not tacky.

I was at Walmart yesterday. They have the same brands of stuff as other stores for less money. The Shark vac is 100 less than at Home Depot.

I dislike walmart and I won't shop there, but I would never judge anyone for registering there. A registry is a registry, I don't see a problem with registering there. You could always do Walmart and one other?

Robin - that's exactly why I am considering walmart lol I LOVE saving money! Walmart is great for appliances and such. Their bedding etc isn't fantastic though. I may do 2. Walmart and BB&B. this will cover everything I could possibly register for!

I'd recommend registering two places. It makes it easier for people to buy things in case one location is farther than another.

It's not so much as tacky, but quality. Sure, wally world has some decent stuff, but you will find much more variety/price range AND better quality with a place like BBB.

I registered at Walmart and I dont see the problem with it. Thats the only store close to my family and I'm fine with the products that I picked out there. yes I do have a BBB registry also for some nicer stuff but walmart is a bulk of my stuff.

I hate Walmart and avoid the store at all costs. Personally I wouldn't want to register there because I want things that will last. Most things from Walmart don't. Yes they carry major brands, but often different models that are cheaper and worse quality. I just like the idea of getting wedding gifts that will last a lifetime, not break 6 months later.

Im confused. Why can't you register with Target or anyother store that delivers to Canada for that matter? As long as there's the option to buy online then it doesnt matter whether there is a store in your area or not. Most people I know buy wedding gifts through online registrys and they are shipped. I personally wouldn't register at Walmart when there are do many better options out there.

It totally depends on your group of friends and family. I don't think tacky is quite the word either way, but it would seem really out of place in my social group. We're all a little older, so our registries have tended towards Macy's/Crate & Barrel/Williams Sonoma. Almost everyone has a few things at Target and BB&B to hit lower price points, but Walmart would be a little weird. (We also don't really have one in our area, so it wouldn't be convenient for most guests, except online.) And on the other side of the coin, if Walmart is one of the places you and your guests normally shop and is appropriate for your budgets, that wouldn't be tacky at all!

Slightly off topic, but don;t be afraid to register for slightly higher priced items. In my family we like to chip in and buy one big gift sometimes rather than small items. Put a nice variety on there and no one will think you are gift grabby.

@ Chelsea, we didn't register for stores that weren't in Canada because those places are only appropriate for those who feel comfortable ordering online and we didn't want people to have to pay shipping, not to mention it doesn't support the local economy which is a huge one for me. It is an idea to explore, though. I know my parents both use the internet but don't feel comfortable shopping online.

It isn't tacky. A registry is a registry. Maybe you could do some Walmart stuff and some BB&B stuff. That way any guests who have issues with Walmart will have another option. I don't really shop at Walmart, so I would probably be frustrated that I had to shop Walmart or give a cash gift. Though I would keep that to myself and blame myself for it because it is my choice.
