Wanting to elope now instead of a wedding..

Kate, on October 22, 2021 at 4:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 11
Hey everyone!

So my wedding has been postponed since August 2020 due to covid, our current date is May 2022 but my wedding is overseas and with Covid still an issue in many countries, over half my guests may not be able to attend in May (and if borders close for my destination we may not be able to attend) and due to the constant changes in the wedding and how long it’s been put off I really just want to elope now, I’m tired of the stress of constantly changing dates and having to inform all the guests constantly and replan everything. Eloping now just seems less stressful and also more intimate. My only hesitation is some of the wedding party has paid for their dresses, which I would offer to reimburse if we cancel, and also my in laws paid for their tickets which would be refundable but take almost a year to refund and I don’t want to disappoint people that are looking forward to it.. thoughts?

Would you consider a micro-wedding with just your bridal party (closest friends) and immediate family? Then have reception at a nice restaurant?

I would but my bridal party are in different states/countries, same with family (I’m not from the States)- makes it tricky which is why we did a destination wedding.

What does your future spouse want to do? Do they want to elope too?

This is a very difficult decision. Could you maybe ask your parents or in-laws about what they would think and if they would be majorly disappointed or if they would understand? Could you just have a party sometime when things with COVID get better but get married in a small ceremony now?

My mom has on set dementia so her opinion seems to change daily but my in laws don’t really care what we do, they want us to do what makes us happy. I’m just really torn because only a few of our guests live in the same country (let alone state), my in laws are in a different state and two of my bridesmaids and close family members are all in different countries. Really tough.. I’m sort of leaning towards maybe just a really small ceremony where we originally had planned that way the people who really want to be there have a chance to go.

This does sound tough and quite a difficult situation to be in. I'm sorry you have to make these decisions at this tough time. Are your overseas guests even able to travel in to the USA or is there restrictions because of COVID? That might have to factor in to your plans as well and make things all the more difficult. It would be nice to have a ceremony if they can all actually be there though but if you want to elope then that's ok too Smiley smile. Sorry I'm not more help for you.

We’re having the wedding in my hometown of Fiji, so people who can’t afford to travel can/could attend. But yes definitely a tough thing to try and figure out..but thank you!

They’re opening borders in December for vaccinated travelers, so come May they may or may not be open so that also would change things for us (again).

Yeah you just never know what's going to happen with the borders at the moment do you? It must be very difficult trying to make plans not knowing what exactly you can and can't do Smiley sad .
