Washed out look- What about the groom?

Afterallthistime...Always, on March 30, 2019 at 2:43 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 16
I always see recommendations on these forums to wear heavier makeup for the wedding so you don’t look washed out in photos. I never wear makeup, and when I do it’s just mascara. I plan to wear a little extra on our wedding day to look more dressy than usual, but not too much. I’ve been slowly practicing natural minimal makeup looks.

FH has been commenting when I’ve been experimenting with new makeup. “Why are you suddenly wearing more makeup?”. I explained I’m practicing for the wedding where I don’t want to look washed out in photos. His response was “Well, I won’t be wearing makeup, and I don’t think I’ll be washed out. That sounds like something people tell brides to convince them they need to hire a MUA.”

I didn’t really have an answer to that. Anyone have any insight on this? I still plan to wear a little more for my own confidence, but he’s kind of convinced me it’s not worth wearing heavy makeup.

It will wash out your feminine features. It's not going to make you look bad or anything but you won't look bridal.

I wore very little make up for my engagement photos and I was so worried because everyone told me to get my makeup done professionally to not look washed out. I looked great! Photographers edit the photos, so they can make sure you do not look "washed out". Wear as much or as little makeup as what makes you feel comfortable.

Oh! I didn’t even think of looking at my engagement pictures to compare haha. Good idea! I wore very minimal makeup for those and they turned out awesome. What a great suggestion!

Haha, my fh says the same thing. I also don't get the "washed out" comment, I look good in pics with no makeup. I am hiring a MUA but really just for light makeup and eyes (and I think it's fun to be at a salon in the morning). I told her I didn't want foundation, eyeliner or lipstick. I would feel really weird all of a sudden wearing a lot of makeup! My fh doesn't like makeup (like absolutely no makeup is best to him) so why would I put on a lot of something that he doesn't like?

Definitely understand wanting to be pampered that morning. I’m hiring a hair stylist because even though I’m good with my hair, I wanted to have that experience hah.

And I completely understand your FH preferring no makeup. I keep trying new eyeshadow and asking my FH if he likes them. He’s like “You should find one that’s the same color as your natural eyelids”. I am like “DUDE...If I wanted my natural skin color I wouldn’t be wearing make up.” Keeping it close to natural but a little enhanced. I agree it’s important to respect FH’s opinions. I don’t want to have my makeup look a way he doesn’t like it, but didn’t want to go completely bare that day.
    glad you can relate!

Your fiancé is 100% right. “Washed out” is a sexist lie. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wearing as much or as little makeup as you desire, but no one is required to wear it to look good in photos. Any photographer who knows what they’re doing both in photo composition and in editing/photoshop will ensure you don’t look washed out!

Makeup isn’t what makes you “look bridal.” Being a bride makes you look bridal.

Haha... love that “sexist lie” comment. It’s true, it is sexist to expect the woman to look perfect & flawless, but guys can just be themselves.
That being said, I would wear some foundation, so that skin doesn’t look oily/shiny or dry, or reflect light unevenly in photos. But I would do this for a man too. I’m still looking for a way to sneak in some tinted moisturizer on FH for our photos haha 😂
The most important thing is that we should all feel free to do what we want: no makeup, natural, or full on - it should be our choice! Nobody should feel pressured or judged for what they want to do.

Disagree, but you are entitled to your own opinion and I am entitled to mine.

I wore almost no makeup when I got married the first time. Mascara, a very light pink lipstick and that was it. I didn’t look washed out in any of our photos. I looked bridal and all my features I love (my eyes and my smile) were still very noticeable.

That’s so great to hear. I basically plan on just doing my eyes and lips, so I’m glad it looked great for you! Makes me feel more confident about my choices!

Thank you for this post! It makes me feel a lot better about choosing to do my own makeup. I was thinking I'd have to pack on the makeup by myself, which could result in a hot mess. But if I just did my normal makeup, I'd probably be okay. Almost fell for it and booked a makeup artist for $125 last night.
