Water beads for floral arrangement- ever used them?

Joanna G, on May 18, 2013 at 4:54 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15

I am looking for a filler for our small centerpieces and found water beads. Has anyone used them? How do they work?

I love them! My roommate and I used them to put those lucky bamboo plants in Smiley smile And it works great.

Just be aware, that if the vase is topped off with water, the water makes the beads invisible, so you only see the color. You have to drain most of the water to make the beads show up.

I'm going to be using mine with LED lights, its a really cool effect. But yeah if you have any water in the vase they turn invisible.

You can get them from any crafts store. I found mine at Hobby Lobby. You can also order them from Amazon.

You can get them from a ton of different places. The amount you need depends on how big your vases are. Buy a few as testers, put them in a huge vase with water to let them expand and then you can see how many you need to fill up one of your centerpieces. They do go pretty far when they expand.

FYI - they are slippery little buggers and will bounce like crazy if you drop them. Don't let them fall down the drain of your sink (will clog) and don't let your pets eat them (toxic).

I love them. I bought them dry fro. Michaels with a coupon and added water myself to make them. If you go this route, be sure you make them like 2 days prior. It takes a bit for them to absorb the water. Then just drain the excess water when you're ready to use. I also loved usind the colored LED in clear beads.

I used them for my floating orchids lanterns. because they disappear when covered with water the orchids looked like they were suspended. it was a great look. i bought the crystals at Michael and hydrated them a couple days before the wedding.
