Water Pill

Danielle, on November 11, 2019 at 2:46 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 13
This may be a controversial topic, but did anyone take a water pill the few nights before the wedding to try and shed excess water weight before the big day? I'm considering taking one the night before to combat any extra bloating since my wedding also falls on the weekend I start my period.

Just be careful. The water pill or diuretic will help you get rid of some extra fluid but will also cause you to lose more electrolytes like potassium and sodium. They can also be dehydrating. I would suggest actually drinking more water in the weeks leading up to your wedding. It will help with the bloating. You don’t want to faint at the altar.

I would consult a doctor first off. Personally, I'd never take a pill/vitamin/medicine/etc. that I hadn't used before right before my wedding.

Drink tons of water, watch your salt intake, get a few workouts in, and you’ll be fine. I would be nervous to take a pill for the first time the night before the wedding.
but the bloat is real! I think just being more cognizant of diet will help.

Water is the way to go and it will keep you hydrated = better looking skin.
You can also try drinking Kombucha.

Luckily I'm on a prescription one but seriously like the others said...be careful since a lack of potassium is dangerous. (I work in the lab)

My personal opinion is to advise against it. I took them the last 2 days for a fitness contest for the pictures almost 2 years ago. Although they worked really well I felt TERRIBLE and I will never use them again. My head was pounding, I was dizzy, and felt overall bad. Definitely not a feeling you want for your wedding. I'm not sure if you will be drinking during your wedding but I could only imagine how terrible drinking with them may also be and how terrible your hangover would be the next day lol. Drinking a lot of water and reducing your sodium intake has been known to help with debloating. Overall, I assure you even if you are a little bloated no one else is going to notice besides you. Don't risk your happy day over it!!

Agreed with the cautions others have mentioned. Drink a LOT of water, avoid excess sodium or any foods that cause bloating, and make sure you get some exercise. I wouldn't try a new drug/pill I had never used before on the day before my wedding, and I'd worry how it would interact with alcohol. Being a little bloated (which others probably won't even notice) is preferred to feeling nauseous, dizzy, etc on your wedding day.

I wouldn’t take anything your body isn’t use to so close to your wedding!

I do bodybuilding competitions so have experience with this that runs the gamut from pretty extreme to minimalist. Most water pills aren't worth a d@mn and can make you feel crappy. Obviously there are prescription diuretics, but please don't mess with those. I strongly agree with everyone who has said to consume more water (~gallon/day or even a little more) and watch your salt intake. You don't even have to cut salt, just don't eat lunch meat, pizza, etc a few days before. Start increasing your water intake as soon as possible too so you get used to it and don't have to pee every 10 minutes. Whatever you do, don't cut water; water cutting is an old bodybuilding trick that actually can cause more bloating and all kinds of electrolyte imbalances. If you really want to try a diuretic, dandelion root is actually very mild and may help in addition to drinking a lot of water. I would still try it ahead of time just to be on the safe side. Lastly, I get tons of bloating and pain around my period. My doctor recommended starting ibuprofen a few days before my period and taking it throughout my period 2-3 times daily whether I feel like I need it or not to keep n top of the cramps and inflammation. It definitely helps and I think actually shortens my period by a couple days. I would check with your doctor to see if this is something they are comfortable with you doing.

I have high blood pressure so I take one anyway. But if you want to drop a few pounds before your wedding, here's what actually works:
    1) Drink tons of water (aim for 64+ oz a day)
    2) Watch your sodium intake.
    3) Eat high-protein low carb meals for 3-5 days before - nix the pasta, rice, beans, potatoes, fruit and fruit juice - and stick to grilled low-fat meats, fish and greens.
    4) Drink green tea. Iced or hot, it acts as a diuretic and is good for you anyway.
    5) Take at least a 20-minute walk every day - and I mean EVERY day. It's the repetitive daily exercise that nudges your body into calorie burning mode.

I managed to lose 3-4 lbs in a week when I followed this type of plan.

As a nurse, I must agree with everyone else. Check with your doctor as well. Diuretics can throw you for a loop if you aren't used to taking them. When you lose water, you lose potassium and sodium.
Potassium has a narrow range and being outside of it can affect your heart, causing dangerous abnormal rhythms. Random fact! Potassium is one of the drugs in the lethal injection. The more you know, huh?
Sodium loss or gain can mess with your brain. Because of osmosis, if someone has too much or too little water in their blood, sodium crosses the blood-brain barrier to correct the imbalance. This causes horrible neurological side effects in either direction. Sorry for the science lesson. We just want you to be careful. It's better to be slightly bloated than in the hospital, lovey. Please be careful with yourself.
