Wax Seals

Lydia, on September 30, 2019 at 6:18 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 5 14
Does anyone have experience using wax seal stamps on invitations? Will they hold in the mail? Or will they be destroyed? Any diy tips are welcome.

I tried to do the wax seals (not with a glue gun) and wow, what an utter sloppy mess! Did multiple practice sessions with blank papers and still a mess! I tossed all of the wax seal stuff out, not even worth cleaning. Good luck!!

Also, it's important to know invitations with wax seals will likely require them to be hand cancelled at the Post Office (running them through the cancelling machine will almost certainly destroy them), which will take longer and may cost more. And, hand cancelling is not an option at all POs.

We did the wax seals with a glue gun for my daughter’s wedding, the seal was on the inside of the mailing envelope and held just fine. The glue type are pliable enough to go through the USPS sorters without breaking. TIPS: put the stamper in a dish with ice cubes between envelopes to cool it off, then tap it on a paper towel to dry. Hold the stamp in place on the wax for 5-10 seconds before removing. Practice your technique a few times before starting. You’ll get the hang of it quickly!

I’ve heard they make wax seals with sticker backings so you can just pop them in the envelopes that way. Much easier, supposedly. I think all the extra fees with the post office still stand: hand cancelling and extra postage because they will likely weigh more than 1 oz with wax seals.

    Don’t spend your hard-earned 💵 on that.

There are other special things that you can get or do.

What about a Stamper that you can use before and after the Wedding?

Finally found a picture of my daughter's seals. They received a LOT of compliments and did not end up costing her additional postage. Her seals were put on the inside pocket folders. But be sure to go have yours weighed at the post office to be sure. As for cost, it was $7 for the stamp and $15 per package for the wax (from Amazon). We purchased 2 packages for 96 invites and had several sticks left over.

I was looking into the same thing. I'd love to see what others have to say as well!

Yes, that’s what I was afraid of. I’m going to rethink my plan.

These are gorgeous! Thank you for the pics and the tips. I’m probably going to design my invitations so that the seal is protected by an outer envelope.

Yea... I was afraid I’d be taking a risk, but I’m an artist and an art teacher and I’m determined to make this work.

Thank you and that’s a good idea to protect the seal. We didn’t have any issues with hers and IMO the effort and minimal cost was well worth it!!

My daughter’s were less than 1 oz, but you’ll need to take one to the post office to be weighed. Other things like oversized or square envelopes can cause the rate to go up. Always best to have the post office take a look.
