Wax Seals

Leanna T., on September 30, 2012 at 2:28 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 20

Hi everyone Smiley smile

I'm thinking of using a pocket fold from cardsandpockets.com and then sealing it with a ribbon and a wax seal. Has anyone ever used wax seals for their invitations? How did it go? Did they arrive at your guests' houses undamaged? Did you have to do anything special for shipping or postage?

Thanks in advance!

I was going to do that and have the men hand deliver them in their military outfits but we ran out of time and it was easier to use stickers and mail them lol For sure though I know they would have to be sealed normally in addition to the wax. That's a good question though, looking forward to the answer!

Oh, I should clarify! I'd only be sealing the *inner* pocket fold part with the wax seal. The outer envelope would be sealed normally.

I love your idea about the hand-delivery, but yeah, that'd be a ton of work! Haha.

Oooo Well as long as it stayed less than one ounce (I believe its 1) then you wouldn't need extra postage! I'm pretty sure as long as its still flat enough to be processed it'll be fine Smiley smile

If you're using the wax seals make sure to put them in another envelope or they (the wax) can get stuck and damaged in the post office automated mailer. I learned that from the Bargain wedding book.

Yeah, I'm mostly wondering about the flatness :/ I assume it could be wider than 1/4".

Combay, thanks for the advice! Do you mean that they shouldn't be on the outermost envelope? So if they were on the pocket fold, and that whole thing was inside the outer envelope, that'd be okay?

Make a sample and take it to the post office to have them check it out, as long as it passes at the front the rest will be fine Smiley laugh

We did wax seals and actually used them on the outside envelope. Most people got their invitation with the seal still intact and attached, so ours worked out pretty good.

We also took them to the post office with the seal attached and made sure they weighed it to determine what our postage would be before we sent them out.

My friend just sent hers out- same thing, made them with cards and pockets with the inner envelope with the wax with no problems. It doesn't really add to the thickness and it is pretty sturdy so it shouldnt get damaged.

I did wax seals on pockets form cardsandpockets.com too! I used lace that I tea stained and used ribbon when I ran out of lace. There was no additional charge and all of my invitations shipped beautifully! I did not do an inner envelope, just the pocket and outer envelope. If you have any other questions feel free to ask! I perfected them after a while.

Wow Erin--those look AWESOME!! Exactly the look I'm going for and the gold wax looks lovely. Did you use C&P's wax?

I actually used the Gun Letter Sealing Wax by nostalgicimpressions.com

It comes in a a glue stick form and you put it in a low temp glue gun. It's an actual wax, not glue.

Then, I used a stamp that I would cool on ice, dry off quickly and stamp into the melted glue right away. It was a lot of fun! I want to put wax seals on everything now!

I am also using the flexible wax from nostalgicimpressions, it's the same as the glue gun wax that erin is talking about but in pellet form. The glue gun really is the easiest way to go if you've not done wax seals before, and they hold up in the mail fabulously, much better than the candle-type wax that comes in most starter kits. My seals are roughly 2mm thick, so pretty skinny! I think my thinnest is prob about 1 mm and by thickest maybe 4mm. After a while, you get pretty good at them.

I have a friend who did that when she got married last year. She sealed the outer envelope & it went fine (so I'm sure you will be OK doing the inner envelope). It added a touch of class to the envelope.

Those are so lovely @Erin! I've been really temped to do a wax seal for our invites but have been worried about how they would turn out.

As long as the outer envelope is sealed normally it shouldnt be a problem. The issue with wax seals lie in the USPS machines, if the wax is on the outside envelope the machine will tear it up and make it unreadable. If the outer envelope is covering the wax, it wont be an issue getting there in one piece but you may have to pay special handling fees.
