Wax seals?

LetItSnow, on December 30, 2013 at 12:22 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

Anyone using a wax seal on their invites? My FH is a big history buff so he wanted to have a vintage feel to the invites so I thought maybe a wax seal would be cute. Does this mean I need to have an inner envelope though? My invites will be flat 5x7 cards, plus an RSVP card and RSVP envelope bound together with a piece of tulle. I was thinking it might work to wax seal the tulle to the back of the invite card. Thoughts? Anyone else doing wax seals? How will you use them?

Why don't you just use the seal to close the outer envelope?

People have said that their wax seals were ruined by post office machinery. I am not sure, but I think the machinery would mess up the seal whether its in an inner envelope or outer envelope due to the heat it produces :/ You could get the envelopes hand cancelled for an additional fee, but I think the sorting machines may still mess it up. . .

What about getting an embossing stamp and embossing some fancy stickers in place of a wax seal? This would have the same feel of a wax stamp, but be more reliable/stable through the mailing process.

Word of warning it is not as simple as it seems. You might want to go buy some wax and a seal and try doing a few before you decide whether you want to do them or not. There is a trick to getting it to look right, plus the wax can get expensive. You also need to take the weight of the wax into consideration when mailing them! And the thickness of the wax it may create some problems for the invites going thru the post office machinery.

We were going to use wax seals on our programs and ended up nixing the idea because of our frustation level with getting them to look "pretty".

I was going to but it made the cost of postage go up because of the added weight. So I decided it wasn't worth it.

We did wax seals are our inner envelopes and LOVED it! If you do it on the outside, just ask the post office to hand cancel your invites, so they don't go through the machines. I think it may cost a little extra per invite, but would be worth it. Since we did ours on the inside envelopes, we just mailed them regularly, and they were fine. We sent them to our parents first, as a trial, to make sure they would be ok before we did the rest of them Smiley smile
This is the website that we ordered our seal and wax through, if it helps. http://www.nostalgicimpressions.com/

ETA: We did the wax sticks with the hot glue gun. It made it super easy.

We're wax sealing our outer envelopes. Not sure if we'll use wax though, or glue gun! Thinking the glue one might be more durable, but I have received a wax sealed outer from the US (to Canada) and it made it just fine. You can also stamp into an ink pad before the wax to get 2 colours.

    Thanks for the input!

I won't do the outer envelope since it will probably get wrecked in the mail but I will try mailing some test envelopes to see about having the wax survive inside.

    Thanks for the Groupon J&B!

Thanks for the web suggestion Laura. I could only find them at Michael's and they are so expensive there!

We're doing it. My FMIL had it already cause she is kind of craft obsessed. They make this stuff wear it seals, and it looks like wax, but it's not actual wax and super easy to work with. You just stamp it down with your stamper. Ours is a fancy cursive "K" in a circle.

    I also want a K.

I see the wax look-alike stuff that is a bit more flexible but it is also a lot more expensive. I'll have to do some trials and see what will work best. Thanks!

My fiance was set on having a wax seal and now he hardly remembers that we bought one. My plan is to just have them on the outer envelope. And try to incorporate them some other way too.

There are some cute other ways to use them, even beyond the wedding. http://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=wax%20seal

For those of you who have done it with the hot glue gun, where did you get the actual sticks?? Are they sold at Michaels?

We just have the actual stamp.

Yep, we are using one. There are lots of websites that discuss the finer details of using them, types of wax to use, etc. (I don't remember them but you can google and they should show up). It sounds like a lot of work but I think they'll be lovely!

One of my friends did wax-sealed inner envelopes on his Yule cards this year, and the wax ended up as red crumbly bits in the bottom of the outer envelope and what looked like a ketchup stain where the wax had been on the inner envelope.
