Wearing the Dress Again?

Sarah, on April 14, 2017 at 1:53 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

Hey All,

DH and I are approaching our 1 year wedding anniversary and were thinking how fun it would be to go out to a nice dinner (we will be in NYC) in our wedding clothes! I saw some pictures from another woman who did it and it looked super fun and cute--I love the idea of getting to wear my gown again, especially after spending so much money on it. That being said, I had it preserved last year and hate to waste the money on that.

So my question is twofold: has anyone ever re-worn their wedding dress and how did it go? Is dress preservation really worth it, or after I wear it, can I just dry clean it and store it myself?

I plan on rewearing my dress annually and just having it dry cleaned afterwards. Sorry couldn't help.

Congratulations on your upcoming first year anniversary. I love this idea but I agree with Kate that it depends on the type of dress and your comfort level.

I would probably look silly in my ballgown if it wasn't my wedding day. Not going to work for me lol

I don't love the idea. I can't imagine showing up at a restaurant in my wedding gown. I feel like everyone at the restaurant will assume you just got married and then you would have to explain you are just wearing your dress again?

Why not get a cute/ dressy white cocktail dress and have your H get dressed up and go out like that? That could become your tradition.

I'm considering getting it altered after the wedding to be a knee length cocktail dress that I can wear again!

I like the idea of altering it to a cocktail dress. I'm trying to envision someone in a restaurant with a wedding gown on and can't imagine it NOT looking weird and awkward.

OP do you have a pic of the example you saw? I'd love to see it.

It is definitely not worth busting it out of the preservation to wear it for one dinner. Dry cleaning and preservation are NOT the same thing.

My dress is a mermaid gown, pic attached, and I loved it so I don't think I'd want to shorten it. The pics I saw looked whimsical. This is the article for anyone interested: http://www.brides.com/story/wearing-wedding-dress-on-anniversary-tradition

@annakay511 I've read of people storing their dresses in airtight containers after dry cleaning and it making no difference. Would you definitely recommend sticking with preservation?

Has anyone else had success (or disaster) in not choosing preservation?

I was chatting about our upcoming wedding with a former employee (before all the Covid craziness) and brought up my dress and mentioned only wearing it once. He told me that his wife puts on her dress every year for their anniversary and they celebrate by having dinner, a dance, or a drink in their wedding attire. They've been married for 20+ years! I thought it was super cute!

I bought my dress pre-owned and the previous owner had it dry cleaned but not preserved. It looks good to me!
