Wedding and Lent

Charla, on March 6, 2015 at 10:42 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 25

So, I didn't totally think about the fact that our wedding will be during Lent season. UGH! We're having a pasta bar for dinner and guest can chose their own toppings, so everyone should be fine, but I'm just hoping that it doesn't affect the wedding day in any other way. (Read: If we're paying for an open bar people better drink up)

I'm a terrible Catholic - if I went to a wedding on a Friday during Lent I'd just break it LOL! I'm sure there are others going to your wedding who will too Smiley smile

This was another considerations (argument my FH had) to push our wedding back (to May 2016). Hes like wont people be giving up stuff during that time (we nixed Easter weekend for the wedding although we liked everyone having Friday off we didn't like taking ppl away from their families that weekend). Luckily I don't think it should be a problem for most of our guest.

Your wedding is on a Friday, right? A pasta bar is actually an awesome thing to have for Friday nights in Lent! I know the Catholic Church doesn't ban alcohol during Lent but I'm not sure of other faiths. Some people give up alcohol for Lent but I have never been one of those people haha.

Don't worry, I'm sure your open bar will be put to good use!!

Yep! Friday night... FH was raised Catholic and most of his family is. What time on Friday do you get to start eating whatever you want? Dinner won't be served until 8PM

I can't speak for all Catholics but I know in our family we didn't eat meat at all on Fridays (seafood was fine but no other meat). I know that here in the Boston area the Cardinal "allowed" Catholics to eat hot dogs on Friday one year because it was opening day for the Red Sox (but wouldn't okay it the year it was also Good Friday). As Lori said, there is no stipulations against drinking alcohol but if some people gave it up for Lent they wouldn't be drinking (but that's a personal choice).

Ok... so maybe things aren't that bad. Maybe I'll ask my caterer if we can add some sort of seafood to our pasta bar instead of just chicken, beef, and bacon lol.

You'll be fine, especially, as Lori said, with the pasta option.

And Jesus did turn water in to wine at the wedding in Cana, if anyone has questions!

Oh yeah your wedding won't be that affected at all!! I know a lot of people who "cheat" for special occasions. Some Catholics fast on Fridays but everyone does this differently (the rule my family and I follow is that we eat two smallish meals, no snacks).

Some years, once the clock hits midnight all bets are off and it's no longer Friday! Other years I try to be stricter and not eat anything from my Friday dinner to breakfast on Saturday. I probably would cheat for a wedding, though! I'm not the best Catholic.

People will drink- no worries about that, bur yes on Fridays during Lent, you cant eat meat. There is no fasting anymore. I try to stay with the no meat but if I went to a wedding and the main entree was meat, I would not turn it away!

Is your guest list mostly catholic? B/c I wouldn't have even thought twice about the date.

Perhaps, some kind of seafood or assorted vegetables that can go into the pasta sauce to bulk it up... think broccoli, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, garlic. The latter may be more cost effective than seafood/shrimp. That way you cover vegetarians likes too....2 birds 1 stone. Thank the Lawd you didnt plan prime rib or something! Good call on the pasta bar! Yummy! Wish i would have thought of that!

As long as the meats are in the sauce i think you have a great option!! or maybe add spinach as a topping to give it a little extra.

There will be several veggie options like mushrooms and assorted peppers that guest can chose from rather than the meat options and our guest list is about 25% Catholic

You will be totally fine! Drinking won't be an issue for most Catholics during Lent, unless they gave it up! On Fridays during Lent, we believe in fasting...with that being said, we can have one "big" meal a day...so dinner should be good! There's no certain time that we can start eating or anything like that. you have plenty of vegetable options!

My FH is Catholic and he still drinks during lent, the only thing he gives up is meat on Ash Wednesday and Fridays lol. I mean, you can't please them all so don't worry about it!

Ha! 25% of my guests are Muslim and my wedding is during Ramadan, I totally get what you mean. Hopefully everyone will figure out how to celebrate!

I didn't think of this either, I can't imagine anyone being affected though as I think all my guest are either non-practicing catholics, jewish or are baptist. But if anyone did give up alcohol for lent, it would just save me money on the bar bill.
