Wedding Announcements: Yay or Nay?

Cathy, on September 25, 2019 at 5:58 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13
My parents have a bunch of friends who didn’t make the guest list cut, partly because I am not close to these people.
Should we send wedding announcements, or not?
FH says “no.” I have no clue.

I mean, you can AFTERWARD but maybe not beforehand as then they might assume they’re invited

I wouldn't do it before your wedding either

Obviously they would go out after. I was just wondering if we should even bother to do them.

It's the kind of thing that used to be done all the time, back in the day. But nowadays, you don't see it much anymore. It's kind of nice, but a really unnecessary expense, in my opinion.

I was thinking to only send wedding announcements to the people that were invited but didn't attend and didn't send a gift (everyone else would get a thank you card). People who weren't invited to the wedding might get offended if I sent them an announcement.

I've read that announcements are supposed to be sent to people who weren't invited. If someone got an invitation (then couldn't make it) and then got an announcement, it would be redundant.

I remember there used to be a section in the newspaper classified ads for wedding and birth announcements; I don't even think the paper does that anymore.

Hmm, could you incorporate into a Christmas/holiday greetings card? An announcement seems quite outdated.

I'd skip the announcement to make sure nobody's feelings get hurt!

We might send a holiday card next year with one of our wedding photos - there are some distant relatives we aren't inviting but we at least want to let them know that we got married. I think sending a wedding announcement is fine.

I wouldn't send anything wedding-related to people not invited to the wedding.

If you send an announcement to someone who was invited and didn't attend, it will look like you're reminding her/him to send a present.

I would recommend sending the wedding announcement. As PP have said, it used to be super common.

We've been thinking about doing the wedding announcement for the same reason. I have a fairly large extended family and to let great aunts & uncles know that may not be able to travel/live far away of the marriage and updated contact information, etc. Also, because of our reception location's size we will not be able to invite all of my parents family friends they wanted to invite.
