Wedding Bummer - Covid

Shannon, on July 24, 2022 at 3:06 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 7

Hi Everyone,

I've struggled with posting this. I'm not looking for a debate or criticism. I'm here to tell you what is happening.

We had our wedding last weekend and about 20% of our guests ended up getting Covid. I started receiving messages from guests 2 days later and was devastated that guests got sick. After what was a magical day, now this.

We had 59 guests and a mostly indoor wedding. Only during the cocktail hour were the windows facing the water open. Having an outdoor wedding in July was not an option, as it's way too hot.

We knew that cases were on the rise and rescheduling was not an option, as a number of guests had booked their travel arrangements weeks and months in advance. We were hoping for the best.

Our venue had a party in the same room earlier in the day until 2 hours prior to our event. The venue had 4 different event rooms and were turning the rooms over from event to event all weekend. There were tons of people in an out of the venue. There were also anywhere between 8-15 different servers at our event alone between cocktail hour, bartenders, and reception. I only noticed a few people wearing masks.

Friends of ours who were married the week prior to us on 7/9 in SC reported about 25% positive cases after their wedding.

I myself did not test positive. I am checking daily on my guests who were affected.

Now that I am hearing cases being rampant, I've come to realize this is the world we live in and everyone knows the risks of attending events.

I have not noticed anyone talking about it on here, but it's happening. I hope your event is germ free.

I'm so sorry that happened, and I hope it doesn't overshadow what was probably a really great day otherwise ❤️

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about cases going up again. Not trying to postpone AGAIN, but also really want to be able to have a safe event. Just seems like there's no winning anymore 🫤

Oh-no! So sorry to hear this happened Shannon. I remember someone posted about what happens if the bride or groom caught it prior to. And I never thought about that. We have asked all of our guest to take a COVID test 24 hours prior to coming to the wedding and if anyone is feeling sick we encourage them to stay home. I hope the ones that did get sick are able to make a full recovery soon ❤️

That’s too bad. I wouldn’t beat yourself up over it. We attended a friends wedding earlier this year and I think close to half the guests caught covid, including us. The reality now is that there is always some risk that comes along with large events.

I am sorry to hear that about your wedding - but sort of like others have said, I think most folks know the assumed risk these days. Covid has become endemic and while there are spikes and lows in case numbers, most people have come to accept the risk when they choose to attend an event and they have tools to mitigate the risk as much as possible for themselves personally (vaccines, masks, testing, etc). Its normal to feel bad about it, but try not to beat yourself up as it is a part of life now unfortunately.

I'm sorry this happened. Glad to hear your wedding was nice though! Your guests came to support you despite the risk of getting COVID. Don't feel bad.

To all of the brides in the comments worried about cases -

It isn't your fault, and COVID likely isn't going to go away, ever. If guests attend your wedding, they are doing so and accepting the risk of getting sick not only from COVID, but the flu, cold, etc.

Don't put that pressure on yourself, and allow your guests to make an informed decision for themselves!
