Wedding Cake Decor...cake topper? Real flowers? Fake flowers? No flowers? Sugar Flowers? *SKETCH PAGE 2*

Joy, on July 24, 2015 at 8:34 AM Posted in Planning 0 35

My wedding cake is part of my package deal from my caterer which is great because it made the wedding cake process very easy. I already placed the order for a 3 tiered double layer wedding cake. I plan to put double layered white and black ribbon around each tier, however I still need to decide on the rest of the cake. I need to decide if I want a cake topper or flowers as a topper. Also I need to decided if I want flowers on each layer, whether it be sugar or silk or fake. My wedding flowers are hydrangeas so if I use flowers that would be the flower I choose. I have attached a pick of the general design of the cake, however my cake tiers will be shorter since I'm only doing double layer and it will be three tiers. What do you guys think? What are you guys doing for your cake?

We are doing a 3 tiered cake with fresh flowers. I am having fresh roses on top though. My colors are red, truffle (a dark brown), ivory and a little metallic gold incorporated somewhere although I am not sure where, LOL ... perhaps the centerpiece vases will be metallic gold. The cake has the deep brown satin ribbons separating each tier, ivory frosting, with the red roses on top. It cost us only an extra $35.00 for the fresh flowers on top of the cake, which we thought was a great deal for fresh flowers. We didn't like the look of the sugary flowers, to us they looked too fake and we didn't like the base of the fake sugary flower and they said they couldn't do anything to change the look of it because that was the way the cake designer could make the sugary flowers. No cake topper.

So you are doing the flowers only on the top? No flowers on the tiers?

We're doing this with Minnie and Mickey figurines on the top. Hydrangea is kind of a weird cake flower (imo). What about another type of flower? Or just a cake topper?

I think that cake would look great with real flowers. That is what we are doing. Here is the inspiration picture for our cake except with fall colors (red purple orange) And we have a cake topper

@Sparkles...are you doing fondant? I was considering doing ribbons like that on my cake also. Thanks for the suggestions about the flowers. I have no idea how to design this cake, especially since I have been looking on piniterest and haven't really found anything I liked.

We are only doing flowers on top. We are very simplistic though. Our cake has a lot of (I don't know what you would call it) lacy type detailing on the canvas of the cake (in ivory frosting) - so we felt too many flowers would take away from that beautiful ivory lace type frosting detail. Some of the pics posted here with flowers at different bases look lovely too though.

This is what we did for our cake. Used leftover flowers from our bouquets and a strand of thick ribbon on each layer. I prefer real flowers on cakes, but some sugar flowers look pretty good too. I think hydrangeas would look good on that cake!

@Joy - yes I do think fresh look better. If the decorater doesn't make good sugar flowers than I think it looks tacky. I think fresh looks classier.

And just my opinion ladies!! Smiley smile

I took this picture of a wedding cake in the display window at the bakery. This will be the size and shape of my wedding cake/tiers. I will add ribbon to the bottom of each tier too. If I add a few flowers to the sides, will that take away from the cake since my tiers don't have much height. The flowers on this cake are silk and I can tell.

I don't even have a great picture of our cake still. the only good picture i have was from a guest who got to the venue early and started taking pictures of shit before everything was done. so our cake didn't have the flowers on it yet.

this is one of the only pictures i have... from the side. and blurry.

We are actually considering a cake just like what you posted but 3 layers. we would have a cake topper and flowers on each layer but just a few so it doesn't look too busy.

@ Jenna, Thanks. You cake looks nice. Did your photographer not take a pic of the cake.

FYI...I am afraid of over doing my cake and putting to my stuff on it.

My wedding flowers are hydrangeas too Smiley smile I like the look of flowers on a cake but hydrangeas wilt quickly out of water. I went with a cake topper.

Thanks @VM Dizzle. I really like the simplicity of the first cake. But it looks like a triple layered cake and mine will only be doubled layer which makes the tiers shorter. But I like your suggestion...maybe I could do a few flowers (maybe 3), the ribbons, and a cake topper. I wish there was an app for designing wedding cakes!
