Wedding cake favor boxes?

weliz, on August 13, 2009 at 8:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 14

I've seen these on a few sites, are you supposed to get boxes so guests can take leftover cake with them? Is anyone doing this? How do you know how many to buy?

I saw a planner that set up all the cake boxes like a 3 tiered wedding cake and it looked really good but would this mean you would need 2x as many slices of cake? one One for them to eat at the wedding and one for them to take home? That could be costly. Oh and who would cut the cake and put into the boxes? Depending on the size of your party that could be a lot of work. well I know I was supposed to give answers but I just added questions lol Anyway I hope it helps!

Good points, Dreamcometrue! I'm trying to make my day-of tasks simpler, not add more, and you're right, we'd have to figure out who would do it and how much extra to get, and spend more money on them. I think I'll just see how much cake is left over at the end of the night, since we're just having dinner at a restaurant they should be able to put out to-go boxes for people to use. Thanks for helping me keep it simple!

I've never seen those cake slice boxes actually used for cake before! In my experience, it's just a cute reference to a wedding cake, and usually some form of favor or candy is in the box and it is displayed as a tiered cake. I find it is most often done for brides who don't have a wedding cake or use a fake cake and don't serve it. I think it would be very messy to get actual slices of cake in there, IMHO.

Thanks, Hello Bella, that makes much more sense than actually using them for cake! What was I thinking? ;-) I think my brain is mush from all the last-minute details.

Weliz now that we have had our wedding I wish that we would have had a few small boxes to put a few pieces of cake in for people that wanted to take some home.

Honestly we had a tier and half and the entire grooms cake left over! LOL we had so much cake we even fed all the staff, security included and still had all that cake! LOL

Small boxes would have been a great idea. Not necessarily the ones your talking about but any small go home box would have been great!

What is sad was that we left for our honeymoon right away and didn't get any left over cake! I am hoping that some of my family ate it but who knows! Hope this helps!

Thanks Stephany, I definitely don't want any cake to go to waste! We will be around the next day, as will many of our out of town guests, so we'll figure out a way to hang on to the leftovers so we can enjoy them the next day. I'll see if the restaurant will let us use their take-out boxes or if I need to provide them. One more thing for the to-do list! ;-)

My FSIL, who spent 20 yrs in the catering business, recommended that we just get plain white bags with a wax lining. if we want to make them fancier, we could decorate them with some stamps or stickers from the dollar store. (i'm leaving them plain white - i have enough to do!) it's much cheaper than boxes and only needs to last a few hours. the caterer/banquet manager should cut and bag up any left over cake that the guests don't eat, but they should leave the top layer whole and box that up for you and hubby. ask your baker for a box for the top layer to freeze for later. my baker friend recommends only waiting 1 month (not the standard year) before eating the top layer and then getting a smaller version of the top layer for your 1-year anniversary if you follow that tradition.

Also recomended to me was to make the cake the primary dessert (saves $&dollarSmiley winking. then to have the fancy wedding cake that everyone sees smaller but buy a regular sheet cake with the same flavor and icing. it will serve easier and save $$.

We bought cream wax-lined cake bags from www.stamponthis.com for .15 cents a piece & I did in fact stamp all 200 of them w/ an oak leaf & acorn to go with our fall theme & they look great!! I used a metallic copper stamp pad!! Happy Planning, I hope this helps!!

Elven Princess, thanks for the original wax-lined bag idea, and I loooove your idea of saving the top layer but eating it sooner! I'm getting a one-year anniversary cake from the baker because I knew I would get annoyed having to move a brick of frozen cake every time I needed to get something from the freezer. Now with your one-month idea, we'll get to have even more yummy cake! What's not to like? ;-)
