Wedding cake flowers

Has anyone used silk or edible flowers for their wedding cake? Where did you get them? (Specific Etsy shops or other sellers?) any negative thoughts on using fake flowers?

My baker used fake flowers for my cake! i don't really know where he got it from though.

i've seen plenty of cakes using fake flowers so i don't really see an issue

I had my florist set aside a few loose blooms that we could use to finish decorating the cake:

We were going to use gum paste/sugar flowers, but, as we want to pick up the cake the day before (our venue will keep it in the refrigerator) instead of worrying about getting it day of (it’s hard to deliver to our venue), our baker recommended using artificial or real flowers (gum paste/sugar flowers could break/crack when refrigerated) instead. I just ordered this artificial set from Etsy (should arrive this week), so hopefully it looks as good in person as it does online. Wedding cake flowers 2

I personally think the trend of real flowers on cake is so weird... but it's very popular! Both floral vendors we interviewed asked if we needed loose florals for cake decoration.

Unless the flowers chosen are already edible and part of the baker's design, I think silk is a great option if you're just going for the aesthetic. I would check with your baker/shop if you haven't already to see what they usually do.

The main disadvantage of silks is always filling the landfill because plastic/silk is not biodegradable. Fresh flowers are. Also, unlike silks, you don’t know how much dust/dirt/etc is on the plastic stems that goes directly into the cake where a florist gets flowers that have not had pesticides used. Silks are generally more expensive than fresh. But gumpaste/sugar flowers are super expensive due to the labor involved.

The only time I would opt for silks/sugar is when the flowers are poisonous (alstroemerias, poinsettia, etc)

I just ordered some fake ones online and will see how they look. The bakery works with the venue and they don’t do elaborate decor as part of the package. Thank you!

Thank you! I did and the cake is part of our venue package so the bakery does not do anything super elaborate and I’m not paying $100 more at this point. I ordered some fake ones online and will see how they look in person. The baker showed me some very realistic fake flowers another bride had dropped off but he didn’t know where she got them from.

Those are beautiful! Thank you for sharing! I did not know that about gum paste/fondant so I’m glad you mentioned that. Our wedding is May 28, could be hot, could be cool.. and it’s at night.
