I agree with Carleen, save the money and hire a pro for this. There are some things you should not have to worry about on your wedding day. When are you going to have time to bake, decorate, transport, set-up, make-up, hair, get dressed, photos, etc. on the day of your wedding? It is very difficult and nerve racking to transport a cake that size already put together, but if you wait till you get to the venue to assemble, it is going to take time, are you going to have that time?

Thank you guys! I was having dreams on baking a cake last night! UGH its already giving me a headache. I think I am going to try to make a 1 tier cake using fondant and see how it goes! I will probably end up getting it professionally done.

We'll be glad to try the sample cakes. Smiley smile Good luck with whatever you try. I'd definitely try just a small cake to start out with. Like the size of a regular small birthday cake the grocery stores make. If you can get that done right with the fondant, then (and only then) would I try to make a layered cake with fondant. The others are right though. If you put the price of the ingredients in a piggy bank, by the time of the wedding you'd have LOTS saved.

I make cakes too - and making a cake that big is HUUUUUGEEEE undertaking. I agree with what a few others have said - you're best off doing a small cutting cake (and please practice first!!).

All you need is sheet cakes in the back to feed the rest. They don't know. The cake goes in the back anyway. I'm doing a small cake in front on a platform and then I'm ordering sheet cakes for the rest. Its cheaper that way.

Ya, I heard that. My sister had her wedding about 4 years ago and she had 300 people just for dinner and over 400 people for the dance. Her cake that she got only fed 150 people and they had a lot left over. To tell you the truth girls not everyone is going to eat cake. It all depends how you serve it. Some places will give everyone a piece even if they dont want it, some will ask everyone, and some will cut the cake and put on it on small plates by the cake therefore if you want it you can grab it on the way passed.

I made my sister-in-laws wedding cake. It was the first one I have ever made and the first time I have ever used fondant. I made the buttercream icing and the fondant from scratch. It really wasn't all that hard. If you have patience, it will work out. Here is a pic of their cake from 9/12/10
