Wedding Contract Change

Sarah, on October 22, 2021 at 11:15 AM Posted in Planning 0 11
So my venue made a change to our contract stating that the caterer that we book must offer services that include bussing tables. If we do not do this, we are subject to a $350 cleaning fee.

My fiancé has been looking at alternative catering options that don’t offer these services. I talked to my venue and they had mentioned a bartender company that offers servers for an additional fee.
After looking at the bartenders contract, it would be a minimum of $120 to have this server be added on.
Should I contact my venue and see if they can comp this service or reduce this amount from the total cost of their rental deposit since this was not apart of the original agreement and adds onto my budget?

If it wasn't part of the original agreement, and both parties have already signed the contract without this change, the venue shouldn't be allowed to make changes. What does your signed contract say about bussing tables?

If this was not a part of the original contract that you signed and agreed upon, they cannot force you to abide by their new policies.

Right it does not say anything about bussing tables. However, they have sent over a “rental contract amendment” to try and make these changes. I assume it would be acceptable if I ask them to reduce the $120 fee from their cost if they are going to require this? I would think that should be reasonable right?

I would definitely request that they reimburse you $120 or whatever the final cost for that fee is (and have that listed in the amendment that they will cover this cost), since this wasn't part of the initial signed agreement.

Also, if they won't cover the cost, I personally wouldn't sign the amendment. They cannot randomly decide to add new fees after the contract is already signed.

I completely agree. I am very cautious and detail oriented when it comes to reviewing vendor contracts. I want to ensure I cover myself from any added costs. I emailed them regarding being reimbursed for this cost. I just wanted to make sure someone else agreed that I should be asking to be reimbursed or if that was not appropriate, thanks!

Without someone to bus the tables, how will the dishes be removed? I am very confused as to why the servers wouldn't also remove the dirty dishes. How would the caterer get their dishes back?

The catering option we are going for isn’t a traditional caterer. We would just be getting disposable plates and silverware for dinner

What does the contract say about amendments or modifications? That part of the agreement will let you know whether the venue has the right to unilaterally change the terms of the contract. A lot of contracts say the original contract is the full and complete agreement of the parties and amendments can only be made in writing and signed by both parties, but check yours to be sure.

Personally I think it makes sense that they want to charge you if your caterer won’t do the clean up and trash removal. Most caterers do clean up and bus tables and if yours won’t, the venue would have to spend their own money paying for them to clean it. Unless the venue said they would bus the tables in the original contract, I would just pay the caterers to do it so you don’t have to pay the venue to clean up.

Say “no, we’re not paying that.”

Venues try to get away with stuff like this. They think we’re dumb and we’ll give in. Be firm about your signed contract.
