Wedding Contract Woes: Covid-19

Jessica, on March 23, 2020 at 12:15 PM Posted in North Carolina Planning 0 2

Our wedding was scheduled for April 2020 at The Oaks at Salem. After guidance was released from the CDC and the Government, we had to cancel. The health and safety of our family is our top priority, and 80% of our guests were to travel to Raleigh for the occasion. The Oaks sent us email updates and offered to reschedule, which was great, but we sent back a date in October we wanted to hold, and it was booked within the three hours it took us to coordinate with friends and family on a date.

Since none of the dates work for us or our family, we had to cancel altogether. We've asked for a refund (even partial) because we just paid the remaining balance a few weeks before this outbreak impacted events, and The Oaks will not budge. The contract does not explicitly state pandemics or government shutdowns, but includes the "Act of God" clause. Is anyone else out there going through something similar with wedding contracts? We've had the same response from other vendors as well.

My heart goes out to all the brides out there impacted by this virus.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this Jessica, and I definitely understand how disappointing this is. Across the board we've heard that wedding vendors have been really flexible and accommodating with rescheduling your wedding plans, but most vendors do not have the financial ability to completely refund all deposits for cancellations.

Is there no future date that can work for even part of your guest list? If you want to reschedule sooner rather than later I'd recommend being open to week day weddings as well. Unfortunately there are only so many Saturdays in the year, and with so many people rescheduling their plans dates are going faster than ever.

I'd also recommend re-reading the act of god clause in your contract to see if it protects both you the client and the venue, or if the clause only covers the venue's liability - and if your early cancellation forfeits only your initial deposit or all payments made up to that point.

I am so sorry to hear you’re going though this! My fiancé and I are supposed to get married in October and are going through all of our contracts now. Please keep updating the post with updates. I’m sure this is a good space not only to vent, but to provide support to other brides in similar situations.
