Wedding date advice

Tory, on March 4, 2021 at 6:48 PM Posted in Planning 0 17
So I fell in love with the idea of having our date be May 20th of next year, and I just found out today that the week of the 13-22 is bike week where we plan on getting married and now I’m conflicted on if I want to change the date or not. I really hate the idea of having to deal with all of the loud noises that weekend (along with our potential rehearsal dinner venue saying they couldn’t accommodate us during this period or after due to it being busy times of the year). We have a feeling that most of the restaurants and the hotels will have this same problem, and we’re having a destination wedding so most of our guests are coming from out of town. I really wanted to avoid the first week of May because I have some friends that would probably have finals that week, and then I also wanted the date to be later so it could be warmer for our earlier events like the shower (we live in Maryland so April is pretty unpredictable with weather). What do you guys think? Should I just suck it up and move it earlier and hope that my friends still in college can make it? (I also have a bridesmaid that will be in college)

Dang, where in Maryland are you? I grew up in DC and live right outside Baltimore. Maybe I can suggest some venues that I looked at?

If it were me and it bothered me that much I would either do it later that month or find a different date I liked. I definitely wouldn't want my bridesmaid to not be able to be there because of something they can't control and if I knew ahead of time it would be loud and busy and hard for my family and friends to book then I would just change it so that those closest to me could be there.

I’m unfortunately getting married in South Carolina 😕 and I definitely have my venue figured out and everything, I’m just really worried about biker week and now I’m worried about doing it any of the other weekends in May (the first because of it interfering with my friends schedules in college and the last weekend because it’s Memorial Day and you’re not supposed to do destination weddings on holiday weekends because of the prices of hotels) so now I just don’t know what to do 😂

Congratulations on your engagement! I would consider other possible dates myrtle during bike week is always hit or miss. Who knows how things will be with the covid by then as well. Choosing a holiday down there is always expensive. See if you can find a good group wedding rate.. the main thing is you might have to be flexible with your date. My wedding got pushed back 6 months due to covid shutdown but its working out better.

Thank you! Yeah after thinking about it more I definitely do not want to deal with bike week. I reached out to my bridesmaid who’s in college and she said that the first weekend should still be fine for her since her finals are usually later in May. But yeah I’m just trying to stay positive about it all, I know other people have had to deal with having to reschedule their entire weddings so close to their set dates like you and I cannot even begin to imagine how frustrating that is

I would not get married on bike week. It’s a massive convention and guests may not even find hotels.

Covid taught me that it’s not when as much as who... do what you can to get your important people there. Maybe 5/20 can be memorable for a bachelorette party? License pick up?

Yeah once I thought about it more it definitely sounded like an awful idea to go during bike week. I can only imagine how crazy packed it is

Yeah I agree! Maybe I’ll celebrate something else on this day instead that will make it special. Can always be the day we leave for our honeymoon or something too ☺️

My friend’s husband goes and loves it. But he sleeps beside his bike wherever he feels like it and comes home, dirty, tired and broke from the massive amounts of food and beer he consumes. It sounds hellish to my introverted self!

Ah! I was wondering where in MD there was a bike week!

What about the first week in June? Your friends will definitely be done with exams by then

Yeah this is definitely an option! I think we were leaning towards before Memorial Day to save money on vendors/hotels being cheaper for guests and everything, but if the first week of May ends up being too hard on my bridesmaids then I might just have to do that first weekend of June and I’d be okay with that

I don't know how Bike Week is there for you, but I live about an hour and a half south of Daytona, and I know when Bike Week comes here it is an absolute madhouse. There is literally not a single hotel room in a 125 mile radius from Daytona, months out from the event. No joke. Sold out in every single direction. I used to work at a hotel and would be calling as far west as Disney World (an hour away) and as far as forty minutes south of my property and finding everyone sold out during Bike Week.

Not to discourage you, but truthfully, if your area's Bike Week is anything like Daytona's, steer clear, especially if you'll have many guests needing hotel rooms.

I TOTALLY understand your worries. I have been waiting 4 yrs to get married. We finally pick a date that works for everyone (we have college age/adult children) we are walking in to look at our venue and my FH remembers our weekend will be Hot August Nights in Reno. Its Reno's biggest event and it is crazy. I had no choice but go forward with it but dang EVERYTHING is costing double for my guests. So if you can change it I would. It will alleviate all the hassles of the city being bombarded with bikes. I was so worried about it but my FH thinks it will be an added festivity for our guests. Hope he is right. 🤣

Yeah unfortunately all of our guests are traveling from out of town, so bike week definitely is not an option. At least I figured it out now and not much closer to the date

Yeah at least your your guests would probably jump on and be involved if they can in that event! I don’t see many of my guests (other than maybe 2 or 3) participating in bike week 😂😂, so I’m definitely going to figure out a different date that works instead to avoid the hassle of guests finding hotels
