Wedding day timeline?

Layla, on September 5, 2021 at 7:26 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

I’m desperately needing help planning my wedding day timeline! My date is January 2022 and sunset is at 4:43pm. I live in the Northeast so it’ll be cold (30’s probably). My photographer said the best time to take pictures is from 2:45pm-4:15pm but my fear is that while I’m taking pictures, guests will have nothing to do. I’m having a micro wedding with about 18 people, half of whom (fiancé’s side) speaks only Russian. So I’m trying to figure out a way that it’s not so awkward for everyone and prevent periods of time where I’m taking pictures with FH and the family is just standing around. This is what I’m thinking:

2:30pm everyone gets to the venue and has a drink3pm ceremony3:30pm-4:30pm family pictures (I’m worried people will be standing around with nothing to do)4:30pm-5:30pm cocktail hour (considering extending this two a 2 hour cocktail hour so 3:30pm-4:30pm so people can eat and drink while we’re taking pictures. Thoughts?)5:30pm-7:30pm dinner7:30pm-9:30pm dancing/music/etc. Also looking for ideas for what to do with everyone besides dancing, like a mixer game or something?

Cocktail hour is supposed to be what you host while you're doing pictures, so why don't you just have cocktail hour from 3:30-4:30 pm?

I would have your cocktail hour 3:30-4:30, as Vicky suggested. If you don't want to start dinner at 4:30, you can extend cocktail hour by a half hour and do 3:30-5? It will take some time at 5pm for guests to get to their tables and introduce you two and everything. I don't think you really need a mixer game. People are usually just fine dancing, drinking, and talking to friends and family.

My concern is that I don’t want to start dinner so early because then dinner and cake will be over by 7ish, and then I’m not sure what to do with everyone. It’s a small wedding with only 18 people so I’m not sure how long we’ll want to dance. I guess this is why people have weddings when the days are longer like spring-fall. I’m only starting early to be able to take pictures outside while it’s light out

If you’re having a videographer, ours had a stand-alone video camera where guests can leave video messages to us. This may be an entertaining touch during cocktail hour or after dinner. They were so much fun to watch when we got our video and people seemed to enjoy it ❤️

Are you at all open to a first look? That can solve a lot of your time issues: you can get the photos done before the ceremony and move the ceremony/reception to a later timeline. If you want some golden hour photos, you can sneak away for a few minutes to take those.
