Wedding Dress Advice

Rachel, on January 3, 2020 at 1:55 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

Hi Everyone!

So, I am getting close to my deadline for purchasing the dress since I was told I need to purchase by March the latest and we are in January now! I wanted to see if anyone had a similar experience.

I tried on a dress and my mom cried because I looked like a bride but I am not in love with the dress because it looks too serious and not playful/romantic, which is what I am going for. So I am leaning towards another dress. I wanted to see if anyone has dealt with this or a similar situation. Also, is the wedding dress supposed to be saying "I am an adult now" and looking serious or can it be playful.

Let me know your thoughts y'all! Also, anyone that is hunting for a dress, happy hunting!

You have to be the one who loves the dress. It's really sweet that your mom loved it, but you're the bride! You should go with what your heart and head say. I had my heart set on a dress but it was discontinued. I waited until the last minute possible to get a dress, and though it worked out in the end for m, I got a dress I LOVED, I would go as soon as you can.

Your dress can be whatever you want it to be. You do not need to appease anyone by looking serious of you'd rather something more fun. The dress deadline is only for if you'll need to order yours. If you can find it off the rack then you have a lot more time.
My wedding isn't until October but I found my dress off the rack in November. It's more unique since it was designed in 2010 (never been worn, was just a dress to try on) and it was so much cheaper than a newer dress. So if you can fit into sample sizes, you don't need to freak out yet.

Your dress can be as "serious" or "playful" as you want it to be, there are no rules that you have to follow! Find a dress that makes you feel like a bride and most importantly, makes you feel beautiful. DON'T by a dress that you don't love, sooo many brides (including myself) suffer from dress regret and sometimes even end up buying a second dress. Also depending on where you get your dress from, ordering by March is not a necessity. It is ideal to give yourself plenty of time for the dress you want to come in and to have alterations done, but you could certainly still find a great dress months closer to your wedding date.

Thanks ladies! I am just worried that I have the wrong mindset with the dress. I think I look beautiful in the dress that I want to go with but I don't necessarily think "I look like a bride. " Do y'all think that or more so, "wow, I look beautiful"?

Tbh I could totally be overthinking this whole thing, which is probably the case by now. lol

You definitely have to love the dress. Don't let anyone tell you what you should/shouldn't wear!

The dress I got was off the rack and discontinued (hence why they put it on clearance) and it's so beautiful and everything I could have ever wanted! And I've never seen the same dress so I know it's unique!

You don't necessarily have to have the "crying" moment (I didn't cry when I put my dress on lol. I just felt radiant and beautiful and like a bride) but as long as you feel comfortable and beautiful in it, that's what matters!

My mom cried at my second choice dress, but not my first. But she still loved the first. I think just seeing me in a bridal gown was exciting at the second salon because it was a big moment for her. We both agreed my dress at the third salon (a few weeks later) was better, even if there weren't tears.

Yeah, I think I am not going to read too much into the tears thing. It seems like just a moment that occurs during the process.

Hi Rachel, your dress should be WHATEVER YOU want it to be, it's your dream dress, don't be swayed by others opinions, you'll know in your ❤️ when you find it, my wedding is in Feb. 2021, I have my dress already, but I tried on over 30 before I found my dream dress, so have fun and look at many options, if you care to see my dress, it's from Stella York style 6979 from the 2019 collection, I ❤️ my dress and YOU will too!!!!!! good luck.

My mom and my sister cried over a dress that was definitely not my dress - in their defense, at the time I thought that the gigantic ballgown was my pick because it looked good on me at the time. I still love that dress too, but I really don't like the top and I think I felt that at the time but thought it was the best I could do.

I went back and found a sweet and romantic gown that I ended up loving more. My mom wasn't with me, but I knew in my heart that I needed a mermaid gown and saw myself in that more. Your dress is an expression of you. Not every woman has that "omg" moment. I honestly think that's hyped up, and you should just go with a dress that makes you feel beautiful. That's what matters on your big day.

I didn't cry when I put on my dress, but that's just how I am with most things as it is. But when I put the dress on, I knew that it was my dress. I can't wait to wear it! My mom didn't get emotional either but I know she loves the dress I picked out.

I didn't shed one tear during my bridal appointments, and I tried on over 40 dresses. Media plays up "the moment", but many brides never cry over their dress. I think parents are often more emotional because they're seeing their children move into a new stage of their lives. Choose the dress that makes you look/feel how you want on your wedding day. While it's nice to have your family/friends love your dress, at the end of the day, you're the one wearing it. You need to feel like it represents you!

Your wedding dress is supposed to make you feel like the most beautiful person on the planet. It should provide a confidence that you dont have in your other clothes.

I already have my dress at my parent’s house for my October wedding and while it is not what I imagined it is so perfect with so much sparkle. I tried it on and fell in love with it and every dress after did not compare, so excited to wear it on the big day, hoping you find yours soon!

Buy what YOU like. Deadlines are different for every shop. I have seen dresses bought and altered week in advance! It costs -- but it can happen.
