Wedding dress alterations

Ok, so I bought this dress almost 2 years ago. My fiancé and I were to get married last July, but COVID messed with things and we will now be getting married on our 10 year anniversary in February. I still have to do alterations since I have lost a little bit of weight along with getting it hemmed and adding a bustle. I keep getting quoted $600+ to do so, which would be the same price at the dress itself. I know it’s not going to be cheap, but is that normal?
Also, since we have moved it from a summer to a winter wedding I was going to inquire about adding sleeves. Is that something that would even be possible with this dress due to the lace? Again, I know that will cost extra but I would like to look into it just in case. It’s not a must by any means and I would be happy with the dress as is, but it is a high desire of mine. Any thoughts?

I think that sounds pretty reasonable. I paid about 450$ for my alterations. Adding sleeves will significantly increase that quote. I don’t think you need to add sleeves just because it’s a winter wedding. I think it looks quite beautiful as is.

That sounds about right given the intricacies of your dress.

I think it is, especially if you’ve heard similar prices from multiple places. Your dress is very detailed, & it takes time for the tailor to adjust it all without changing the look/design. My dress is more simple & I have pretty standard alterations but I’m in a HCOL area, and I’m looking at around $500.

Have you considered getting a bolero or shrug instead of adding sleeves? It might be more cost effective and you can take it off if you get warm! 😊

Due to the lacing on the back I really don’t want to cover it up, but it’s something I thought about.

That price was without me mentioning the sleeves and without them seeing my dress. That’s what I’m getting for starting price.

Very true and that’s why I’m nervous because this is what I’m being quoted without them seeing the dress. That’s where alterations costs start.

I think sheer sleeves look possible! And not surprised to hear the alteration costs, the dress itself looks like it would be complex to alter and the fine fabric would be at risk of tears.

You're going to look fabulous when it's done!

Thank you. ☺️ I’m wanting to add sleeves not because of warmth because lace won’t be much warmer. I was wanting sleeves because of comfortability (the rhinestones rub against my armpit) and because I’ve become self conscious about my arms.

Thanks I appreciate it. ☺️ I was expecting it to be pricier but none of the quotes were with them seeing the dress, so a base price. I know with the fine fabric, lace and details that it will be more expensive, but I wasn’t expecting the starting prices to be that high.

To get an honest quote I'd highly recommend you email your alterations persons a few photos of your dress when looking for quotes or going in person with the pics on your phone so they can more accurately quote you prices and what can/cannot be done. It's what I did and it saved me a little from sticker shock.
