Wedding dress came in super early?

Samantha, on October 17, 2021 at 10:18 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8
Hi! I ordered my wedding dress two weeks ago and it's already here??? The salon will hold onto it for two months for free then charge $25/month to store it, which I might consider for insurance purposes. But if I didn't, would my dress be at risk for yellowing or anything while I hold onto it..?

As long as you have a dark closet to hang it up in, you should be fine. Dress yellowing takes years.

Early on in daughter's engagement the bridal chain Alfred Angelo filed for bankruptcy and closed the doors of all shops without any notice. It was a huge fiasco and there were brides who couldn't get their fully paid for dresses. That had a big impact on daughter so when her dress came in to the salon where she bought it, we immediately went and picked it up and stored it at home for a full year before the wedding. The salon had it hanging in a white cloth bag and just told her to ALWAYS make sure the ribbon hanging straps (under the arms and train) were securely on the hanger in addition to the thin decorative dress straps -- those ribbon straps are sewn in in a way to support the weight of the dress without stretching the dress fabric. We hung the dress in the bag on the back of the door to a room that got little use. For fun (and to make sure she was maintaining her weight/size) daughter tried her dress on about every 6 weeks or so and then we'd rehang it. When it was time for alterations, she took it back to the salon and they kept it for about a month while they were working on it, but then we took it back home for the last month before the wedding. Your salon should be able to give you instructions for storing your dress safely, but also just use common sense like keeping it out of direct sunlight or near a heat source or where pets might be able to damage it (all have been reported to have happened by brides on this forum). Good luck!

As long as you protect the dress from sunlight, you should not experience any yellowing. I was instructed to keep mine in a breathable garment bag, and to lay it flat somewhere dark and safe. Mine has been laying in a garment bag on the top shelf of my closet for nearly 2 years now (due to multiple postponements), and has not become discolored at all.

My dress was in a garment bag in our closet for 2 years because we had to postpone due to COVID. It was still white with no yellow coloring at all!

I bought my dress pre-owned two years ago and stored it in a garment bag in my closet away from light and moisture and it looks absolutely fine. Wedding dresses are still made of the same fabric/fibers as nearly everything else in your closet; as long as you have a safe place to store it away from the prying eyes of your spouse-to-be (if you are trying to keep the dress a surprise) there is no reason why I would leave it at the store instead of taking it home.

Are you having alterations done at the bridal shop or elsewhere?

The bridal shop doesn't do alterations in house but has a seamstress partner they recommend everyone to. Unsure what her storage capabilities are once the alterations have been completed. But we have a large storage closet in our house I should be able to put my dress in. Thank you all for your help!!

Wherever you have alterations done will also hold your dress for the period of time that it takes to complete the alterations - depending on how extensive they are and how many fittings you need this could be a period of several months or more.

I think its safe to bring the dress home if you have a good place to keep it and the closet you mentioned sounds ideal!
