Wedding dress for an elopement

Kiyome, on September 22, 2019 at 6:31 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12
For all you ladies who eloped abroad, how did you go about getting and bringing a wedding dress?? Did you still go dress shopping? How did you get the wedding dress to your destination? Did you take it on your flight as a carry on? Or did you have it shipped to your hotel? I've heard that some brides have went as far as buying an extra seat on the plane for their dress, but that seems like it would be crazy expensive. FH and I are eloping in Ireland if that helps any

Hey Kiyome! Where in Ireland are you getting married? I’m from Ireland and would love to know a little about your plans!!

There are lots of different things to consider when traveling with your wedding gown. Have you booked your flights yet? Once you know what airline you are flying with, you can start looking into how they handle large, delicate carry on items. They will be a good source of information about what to expect at the airport. You should also ensure that your dress will fit within their carry on restrictions!! You should obviously pack your gown into a garment back and perhaps ask your bridal salon how they would recommend folding or rolling it so that it causes the least amount of creasing.

If your flight isn’t full, you may be able to ask a flight attendant would it be possible to use a free seat for your dress. You may be able to relocate so that you can sit beside it.

Lastly, I would definitely recommend packing a portable steamer, or looking into dry cleaners in the area once you arrive so that you can get all the creases out of your dress.

I hope this is helpful to you!!

Hi!!! Oh my goodness yes! I would love to tell you all of the plans... haha😂 and I would love to hear what you think and all of your advice! So we are going to be getting married in December of 2021 on the Cliffs of Moher. We know we are going to be staying somewhere near the Shannon Airport (most likely an airbnb) We haven't booked our flights yet, but we know for sure that will be one of the very first things we pay for! We are going to be staying in Ireland for about 2 weeks and "honeymooning" in London for 2 more weeks. I will definitely ask the bridal salon when I find the dress how to fold or roll it! And I will for sure put a portable steamer on my wedding shopping list! That is extremely helpful!! Thank you so much!

Also, I wanted to know if December is a good time to get married in Ireland. I've heard it is rainy all year round, but especially in the winter months. I have no clue what to expect😂 we wanted to get married on December 10th because that is our anniversary of when we started dating.

I'm so happy that I could help!! 😃

The Cliffs of Moher are such a stunning location! I recently visited them again and it has such breathtaking scenery! You will definitely get some amazing photographs!!

There is also so much to do in the general area that you won't be bored! the area is called the Wild Atlantic Way so if you search that, you will find lots more things to do and adventures to take! Are you planning on hiring a car?

The weather is totally unpredictable but I would definitely be prepared for rain! it will also most likely be quite cold, especially with the sea breeze coming in over the cliffs. I would definitely look into some sort of cape or bridal coat to wear so you don't freeze!

Awesome!😁 Thank you for the recommendation! We definitely plan on adventuring a lot, so that helps! We think we want to rent a car so we can get around easier. Do you think it would be easier to take a bus or train or something?? I will definitely get a bridal Cape or coat to wear. And we might bring an umbrella too

If you or your SO are comfortable driving in another country, I definitely think that it would be your best option to rent a car. There are a lot of beautiful places to see and having a car would definitely free up your time so you don't have to stick to bus/train schedules!

There are some really beautiful bridal capes and coats available. What style/look are you thinking you will go for?

An umbrella is definitely a good idea too! Just in case!😛

We flew from OH to Vegas with my dress. I gently rolled it up and put it in a carry on. I made sure when I bought it that it wouldn't be huge and require a ton of extra space. Some airlines have a place you can hang garments and some do not so definitely something to check into but if all else fails just put it in your carry on with the other important things like jewelry and shoes. Surprisingly when I unrolled it there were no wrinkles and it didn't need steamed! I almost shipped it to MIL who lives near Vegas but I was too afraid it would get lost in the mail or damaged and no way was I trusting it in luggage going under the plain which also carries the risk of getting lost.

No😔 I wish. Haha. I'm trying to stop myself from dress shopping because I don't want to go through the "dress regret." I want to start wedding dress shopping in December 2020, so I would have one year to find the dress😊 I'm not sure if an elopement/destination wedding mean I should shop earlier😬

No matter where your wedding is, its still your wedding! Having it in such a spendid locale is all the more reason to get the dress of your dreams. I wouldnt get a huge ballgown as you will have the traveling concerns but this is still YOUR day and you should make of it what you want it to be.

Many Airlines have a few closets on board so as long as you don’t get a HUGE ball gown they could likely fit it in one of the onboard closets. I will be bringing my dress on board with me (getting married in Hawaii) and i will be draping it over the seat next to me if it’s open.
My dress is also made of polyester mainly so the good thing about synthetic fibers is they don’t shrink as much with wet weather and they don’t wrinkle much!!
Also you can call ahead of time and ask about the closets on board (make sure you mention you’re asking cause you’re bringing a wedding dress on board, sometimes you also get upgraded this way!) and you can call right before the flight (maybe a week) if they don’t have closets/ you’d rather the dress lay next to you and say “Hello, I was wondering how full the flight will be? I am traveling with a wedding dress and was wondering if it’s not a full flight if I could lay the dress in an empty seat?”
Hope this helps some!!! Congratulations! I wanna go to Ireland so bad!!
