Wedding dress issues

Sarah, on February 14, 2021 at 6:37 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16
I just tried my wedding dress on today. It won’t zip all the way up now. It won’t zip up the last inch. I weigh the same as when I bought the dress, I’m eating healthy, and exercising to help me stay in shape to fit in the dress. Any suggestions? I only paid $107.00 for the dress. I heard alterations can cost more than that. Should I get a new dress or wait? I’m not getting married until October.

I’m so sorry - this happened to me too. Would you consider changing the back to a corset? That would be an easy workaround (assuming you’re opened to it and your dress could be modified in that way).

I wouldn’t do anything about it at the moment. You have time- if it’s still not zipping up by July, ask a seamstress how much it would cost.

I would be opened to the idea. I just don’t want to pay more then I paid for the dress in alterations. Since I can go back to the same bridal shop to buy another dress for the same price.

Hi I am currently in the same situation I bought my dress last November when I was pregnant, Now the dress does not fit me and even if I did loose the weight I would still need alterations which will cost an arm and a leg so my fiance is giving me his card and letting me pick out the dress of my dreams. I think you should get a new dress but that is my opinion

Makes sense. And honestly, alterations can be expensive — definitely more than the price you paid for your dress. If you love your dress, I would wait it out for a couple of months to see what happens. It may just be that your weight has shifted and it may shift more or you lose. If things don’t change, then purchase a new dress from the same shop. Good luck! Either way, you got this!

I would try it again around May and then make a decision on if you should get a new dress. That way you still have 5 months for a dress to come in if you need to order it. You're probably gaining muscle where you didn't have it when you bought the dress. I definitely wouldn't pay more in alterations than the dress cost

That is nice of him. I know I’m thinking about getting a new dress, if by say August I can’t get this one to fit again.

I would wait but also note that sometimes trying to zip a dress yourself can present an issue because of how you’re contorting. I’ve heard of people trying to get into their dresses, stressing that they don’t fit, rushing to a seamstress, only to have them able to zip it no problem — so before stressing, make sure to try with a second set of hands !

I had my mom try zipping it up for me and she could not get it to zip all the way.

It might be something as simple as needing to either replace the zipper (invisible zippers can break really easily) or just adding a button or hook-and-eye to the top of your dress if you don't have one (or adding another if you do). Just that slight change can make a huge difference.

Have you tried any control undergarments? I wore "Spanx and a prayer" under my wedding dress!

Try spanx thinkstincs collection. Extremely thin and smooth, and they have several different designs. (With ir without bust support, with or without thigh skimmers, some are thongs but control top.

It also could be the zipper or needing to add a separate closure at the top. I make clothes including a few gowns. It's a simple fix to try
