Wedding dress not done, what to do?

Nerdchick, on June 7, 2019 at 10:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

13 days until "pick up" date and my dress is not completed from alterations.

Background: dress order date: mid November; dress arrived in store: April 20th; dress alterations: bringing the straps and back closer together, taking off tulle layer, adding applicay from tulle to dress. Custom detachable ballgown skirt. The day I said "yes to the dress" I spoke with seamstress about skirt I fell in love with from another dress. She said "yep I can make that no problem". She would not start making said skirt until dress arrived in store.

Dress was paid in full before alterations were able to begin. I have had WEEKLY appointments, all that has been done is back taken in (not completed) and bust sewn (although pinned perfectly, sewn incorrectly).
The skirt fabric and design of the detachable skirt is wrong. Every week I ask what will be completed by next time I come in, it is not done. Today, after already wanting to break down from the stress of general life AND wedding planning, the first thing she says, "I had a family emergency this week". So not much got done. I am an extremely empathetic person, of course I understand. But what do I do if the dress is not done!?

Ok long story short, what do I do if my dress is not completed in time for my wedding? What if I have nothing to wear!?!? I am FREAKING OUT!!!

Side note alterations prices have not been discussed??

This is a local store, they have been so nice. I just don't know what to do. I am stressing out!!

I used to work in a bridal salon and you wouldn’t believe how many dresses were completed in a day...that’s right A DAY. So I wouldn’t panic, it’s possible it will get done. However I feel like the employees should be given you a little more reassurance. I think they are tooooo nonchalant. I’d tell them that you can’t come back after a certain date and let them know you need the dress by then. If it’s not done by then I would suggest reaching out the manager or possibly even hitting them on social media.

I don't believe it is a nonchalant response. The seamstress has mentioned she's going through personal issues, I have heard the owner talking on the phone with other brides about times lines and how busy the steamstres is with so many dresses to work on. I really think the seamstress has too much work, and not enough time for all the dresses... I have too much anxiety and need to know the next step to look to if my dress is not done befo5 my wedding.

I'd be in panic mode too! They need to be made to know that you're not playing games with them. You must have a firm date the next time you come in.
Is there anywhere else you might be able to find another dress that requires little to no alterations required if your dress isn't ready in time? That's the only thing I can think of.

The "firm date" is June 20th (2 days before my wedding)... But how it's been going, it just doesn't seem likely. I have seen some white dress at Ross that could be a last minute resort... So I guess I just need to talk to the shop owner about if their in store alterations doesn't finish on time, do they refund my dress? I just don't know.

You have time but she needs to commit to a finish deadline/price and she should have told you BEFORE she started work how much the cost would be. Get her to confirm a price/deadline immediately or find a back-up seamstress and if she can price/do within deadline, take it to her.

I had my final fitting just a week before the wedding and 5 days before I left to my destination place. I was afraid I would need extra alterations and they said they’ll make it happen on those last day if need it. On my last fitting I saw them working on my dress right before I got there. So I believe is possible they’ll get it done for you. No worries.

I agree with this. Have them lock in a guaranteed date & price ASAP! That will take loads of stress off of you. But have a reliable seamstress on back up (that you can confirm a timeline with) just in case you need someone last minute. Really good seamstresses that only work on wedding dresses to me seem more pricey, but at the end of the day... you need your dress!

Wow sorry you are going through this. I totally understand your stress I agree with the other ladies empathetic or not you need a price, a deadline and you need to know their policy on undelivered dress times. You also should probably look for another dress just in case maybe go look at one and ask the store owner to hold until 6/20 when you were supposed to receive you actual dress. This way you have a back up plan although you will still be stressed I think actually knowing their is a back-up dress is reassurance.

I'm so sorry! What does your contract say? Is there an agreement about what happens if it is not ready in time? When you speak to the seamstress about the timeline are they confident that it will be done on time, despite it not being done now? They may feel things are going exactly to the timeline they wish, so you may be totally fine, but it would probably be a comfort to you if they let you know that!

I'd talk to the owner and be honest. Tell her you're really uncomfortable but don't want to be mean to someone. Tell her you need to have the dress completed by date and that's it. I'd pick a little earlier than the date you have incase.
I'd tell the owner I need a price NOW. Price should have been agreed upon before anything.
