Wedding dress preservation and boxing

Sarahdell, on June 3, 2015 at 9:32 AM Posted in Married Life 0 23

My dress had been hanging in the garment bag it came in from the corner of my bookshelf since October. I have been dragging my feet because I don't know anything about gown preservation. There is a cleaner/laundromat in town that does it and I actually have a coupon for $15 off ...not sure what the whole service costs... but is there anything that might make one preservationist better than another? Did you have your dress preserved or will you? How did you choose? Did you have to send it out? What did it cost?

If you're in NJ or close, Hallak is the way to go. They do all their preservation on site, and they are fantastic.

I am not in NJ - any idea if they'll take a dress by mail?

David's Bridal does it - you can buy the box, and then you ship it out and they ship it back to you. I actually bought the kit when it was on sale in November for like 50 some odd dollars.

ETA: you do not have to buy your dress from DB in order to use this service. I bought my dress else where.

@Celia - I just sent an email to Hallak. Not sure if they take it by mail but at least I'll get an idea of cost. Smiley smile

The one I saw locally on groupon was $250 for the groupon, regular $500. I don't know if that's normal or if there's a big difference in different services you can get. Anyway, my dress only cost $500 to begin with so I decided to handwash my gown in the bathtub with frangrance/colour free Sunlight soup and now it's lying flat in it's garment bag. My dress is tulle and lace (no satin). I was able to get almost all of the grass stains out, except under the hem.

Sarah: ballpark how much was DB's service on sale?

I got my cleaning and preservation box from DB for super cheap the day I bought my dress. All I have to do is throw it in the box and mail it out and then send it back to me all nice and neat. The salesgirl even said that she would be happy to package it up for me if I took it back in to the store with my box after the wedding if I was worried about damaging the dress. I think it is normally $150 through DB?

I'm debating on what to do with mine, I don't plan on having kids so is it worth keeping?

Notice the date of my wedding.

So my dress is still where I put it - hanging over a chair in the spare room (which looks more like storage). The DB box for preservation is in the living room.

    Why they haven't met, I don't know.

I was planning to use Alfred Angelo's service, it's only a little more than DB, BUT the DB dress preservation has a big ribbon with "David's Bridal" printed all across it and "David's Bridal" written all over the box, and no offense to anyone who bought a DB dress, but my dress is NOT from DB and so I don't want their name all over it!! My dress isn't from AA either but they don't have their name all over the gown preservation box Smiley smile

I guess my question is what are you preserving it for? I have no idea what to do with my dress--in a garment bag or box--after the fact.

I'm actually on this site because my daughter is getting married in August. My mom actually had my wedding dress preserved and now I think it was a waste of money. I took my wedding dress out of the box after all these years and it looked great. I didn't want my daughter to feel like she had to wear my dress because honestly, I wouldn't have worn it again. The style back then was the big bow on the butt which just isn't flattering. I think styles change and chances of your daughter wanting to wear your dress might be slim. I've decided to donate mine to a program that makes gowns for babies that have passed away after or during birth. I'm not going to continue to store it for no reason because to me the memories aren't cherished in a box in a closet. I feel good that it's going to a good cause since my only daughter has chosen a different beautiful gown.

I bought my dress at a small salon, but after researching $200-$300 to clean my gown that only cost $1,000 new, I decided against that.

I also got the David's Bridal cleaning box on sale for $75, sent it off and it came back very clean (really only the bottom that dragged was dirty)

I then decided to sell my gown, before it went out of style, on E-Bay so that a bride on a budget could enjoy it!

My sister has hers in a box, but I think I am going to donate mine. I found this company who will make christening gowns for babies in the NICU. My husband gave me a sketch of my dress for my wedding present, so I cannot see why I would want to keep my dress. I found them here, as this is where my husband ordered the sketch. http://www.mydreamlines.com/nicu-helping-hands/ Good luck with your search.
