Wedding Dress Sizing Anxiety

Anisa, on June 28, 2019 at 11:01 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

So, after visiting several salons, and trying on about 20 dresses, I FINALLY said yes to the dress last night!

My measurements are: Bust: 32; Waist:26.5; Hip: 37.

My consultant and the store manager thought that the size 8 from this designer would fit me, the measurement is B:34; W:26; H:37, which I am just off by 1/2 an inch on the waist. BUT we eventually decided to go with a size 10 instead, which has the following measurements: B:36; W:28; H:39, because they advised it is easier to take away material than to add material.

I have 1 year until my wedding, and was planning to tone my stomach, so I think a size 8 would've been best for me, because I am worried that the size 10, which is quite big overall isn't going to look great at the end of all of the alterations because there will be a lot of alternations done to it. I'm mostly worried about how the bust of this dress will end up looking, going from a 36 to a 32.. but the salon's seamstress does have a lot of very positive reviews, but I am still worried.

Maybe i just need to trust the process and stop worrying so much?

Anyone have any advice or similar issues as me? I'd love to hear about it!

PS; I cannot share any details about my dress as my FH might see! Smiley xd

I have nearly the same measurements as you!

    33-26-36

I got a dress off the rack that was a size 8, however I would have been a size 6 based on Maggie Sottero's sizing chart. The dress seemed huge on me! But I was reassured that since it was simple crepe material it would be easy to take it. My seamstress did an amazing job and now the dress looks like it was made for me! So trust the process. However, if I had the option, I would have ordered the 6 instead of the 8 and I would have had less alteration costs.

I was in basically the same position as you. I was right in between a 12 and a 14 and they advised me to get the 14. I had lost some weight and planned to lose some more and was worried it would be way too big. I trusted the process and whoa the 14 fits me PERFECTLY. I still plan to lose some weight before October, but it'll be to a point that taking it in, I'm hoping won't be an issue. I know your bust will be a bit different as I only went up one size, but I will say, there is no way my dress would have fit if I'd order the 12! Hope this helps! I was super anxious about it too! I have almost the same measurements as you! The first dress I got they ordered me a size 12... like just no 😂 my second dress was a size 6 and it fit much better! But being that my hips are so much bigger then my waist it bunched up and looked funny so I probably would have wanted a 8 so they were able to size it down where it needed to be on each point of my body. I need up not going with either of the two before mentioned dresses and orderd my now dress in a size 4(however I'm pretty sure it's a street size 4 because it is a bit loose in some areas) bottom line I think you will be fine. Would the 8 probably have been the better choice, yes, but with the 10 I think you have more room to fully customize it to your exact shape. Are you able to exchange it for the smaller size if the 10 comes in and is just way to big?? If yes, I would probably do that instead of altering the 10. Either way I think you will be ok though!!

Omg! Thank you guys for ALL of your feedback! I ended up calling the bridal salon back and they were so kind in allowing me to change my size to the 8! I feel A LOT better, since my gut was telling me to stick with the size 8.

I appreciate all of you and I'm so glad all of your dress anxiety worked out too!

My consultant said I was a size 6 as that was what I tried on and it was perfect. I ordered a 6 not knowing that sample dresses stretch out. When I received my dress it didn't fit and I was told there wasn't enough material to let it out. So now I'm not only dealing with planning the most important day of my life. I now have to be very aware of what I eat and do to not gain weight. Ordering a new dress isn't an option as there isn't enough time. I wish I had known to size up. Your seamstress will make your dress beautiful trust her abilities. Everything will be ok.
