Wedding dress sizing/alterations

Cassi, on May 23, 2020 at 11:08 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 33
Hey guys,

So, I am actively losing weight (I know, cliche.) My wedding is not until June 26,2021. I ordered my dress online from David’s bridal because well, sale and pandemic. 🙄
I really like the dress. I’m crushed I didn’t get to have the bridal experience, but hope to sorta have one when I take it in to find a veil and such. ANYWAY. I’ve been having alittle anxiety all the sudden about the size. It fits like a glove now, and I know you should always buy for your current body type. But gosh, I hate the thought of paying a fortune in alterations if I would have to (fortunately, yet unfortunately) size down a couple sizes or so. Also, the bagginess under the boobs 🙄. Would a size down help this? I’m wondering if I should exchange it out from a 16w row 14. Would that be easier and then let the other parts out IF I don’t lose the weight? (I know it can be let out 2 sizes.) There’s clear stitching where big boobs would fill it out. Anyone experience this? Can alterations help? Are cups sizes in these dresses standard and a size down won’t matter? Argh! Help!

I love the fact that it has pockets! I would advise keeping the bigger size because it is way cheaper to size it down than it is to size up! I ordered my current size (18, ugh) and will hopefully have lost this stupid chemo weight by the wedding!

I just hope not to pay more than what the dress is worth lol! Freakin small boobs 🙄. I can’t help but notice on your profile it took 10 years for your proposal. Me toooo!!! Haha. It’s unfortunate I waited that long and had to say yes to my dress in my bathroom 😒.

Forgot to add the back! But I was more focused on showing the bagginess in the boob area. But this can help show structure. Wedding dress sizing/alterations 2

As someone with big boobs (that tried to kill me) I envy you smaller chested ladies! They make everything look so awkward if you also have a belly (even a small one)! It's still always cheaper to take in dresses than let them out!

Haha!!! I was about to write the same thing. I love dresses with pockets, especially wedding dress. Because we can carry things without our bag 😉

I am wearing size petite 000 but the bridal boutique told me to order 4 due to some part of my body that is not proportional. So basically look for the length or width that is needed, everything else would be hemmed or taken in.

Fabulous dress on you! How much weight do you plan to lose and how much realistically do you think you’ll lose? And if you’re stressed, do you tend to gain weight or lose weight? I worked at a bridal shop after my wedding and it’s best to order the size you are and know you can generally take it IN two sizes (to make it smaller), but you can only let out a dress a tiny bit (ask the shop how much they could take out that dress).

I ordered a size down because I was in between sizes, I lose weight when I stress, and while I planned to lose 15 pounds I knew I’d lose 5 to at least be order down 1/2 size.

Well I started working with a personal trainer in April and I have lost almost 5 lbs and lost several inches so far. So there lies my concern. This was my 4 week progress. I do know it’s possible it’s very unlikely I’ll work with him all the way up to the wedding, but if I do then 😬. The wedding dress can be let out 2 sizes is what I was told. Now to be fair, the picture on the left is when I tried on this dress and it fit perfectly. Wedding dress sizing/alterations 3

I think it’s also worth noting that I can’t remember the last time I fit into anything smaller than a size 12. I have thryoid issues and I think my body structure just generally lands me there. Idk. But that was my goal at the beginning of the process was to drop 2 pant sizes and it wearing a 14/16 now. So I know I have to stay realistic as well!

I would stay with the bigger size, it is easier to take in than take out. Also just have your seamstress add boob cups on the inside. It will help. The dress is beautiful on you and it just needs a few tweaks to define everything better. Are you able to try the smaller size at all? See how you feel in it?

Side note on dress sizing, why in the world do these designers make dresses Where the comparable “street size” is way smaller? Lol I am a size 8 and I had to order a size 12 dress. The bridal shop said that is typical. I know it’s just a number but I would have felt better not having to go up 2 sizes to get it to fit hahaha

Thanks! This is only the second dress I tried one (the first one was also ordered and sent back), so as you can imagine without the in store experience and not trying on more, I was also worried and hoped I had picked the right one. I wanted that experience for so long 😩.

Unless David’s Bridal has the size 14 in store, I wouldn’t be able to try the smaller size without exchanging it out through mail. I doubt I’ll get that lucky though. I mean, is the cup size basically the same in every dress? Because if so, that alleviates half the issue since sizing down would change nothing. That sticking under the boobs that almost looks like boning is what is getting to me. It’s a few inches underneath and I’m afraid it’ll look ridiculous if people notice. I just was t sure if the cups were bigger because it was a plus size and it’s assumed a plus size would have bigger boobs 🙄

I would keep the dress. Taking things in is much easier (and less expensive) than letting things out. When a dress needs to be taken in a seamstress can clip it and mark it so you have an idea of what it will look like - also there is ample fabric to work with. If a dress needs to be let out, it can be really difficult to measure and mark correctly, especially if you cannot even get the dress on, and it is more time consuming and you may have to make additional visits to the seamstress. There is also a limit as to how much fabric there is in all areas so a dress has more leeway for downsizing than upsizing.

When I buy street size dresses they are usually too short in the torso and also gape at the waist. Almost all the dresses I own would fit better if I had them taken in an inch or two just at the waist, but I find if I'm going to go through the effort of alterations it is actually better to size up because then there is a little extra length in the torso, so it fits better lengthwise. If I'm going to go through the effort of stitching seams, I might as well just have a dress that fits really well vs one that fits better but still isn't perfect to my proportions.

Also when you go for alterations a seamstress will add cups which will help fill out the top and provide support and structure. It's a gorgeous dress!

I’m sure they can make alterations to have it fit your chest better. I have the curse of large breasts and I was shocked to learn what could be done to help the dress fit them better, and to keep me feeling comfortable. Even like I said, adding cups and structure would probably make a big difference. I still think it is riskier to have a dress that is a too small than a bit big. Make sure you find a seamstress that is confident that she can do it. Is it possible to meet or video chat with a private Wedding dress seamstress to see their opinion? Make sure itssomeone who deals with wedding dresses frequently and for a long time. I don’t know if David’s bridal offers alterations or not but a second option may help. My seamstress only alters wedding dresses, and works closely with the designers for years.

Do you feel I should keep the size although it’s a year out? In two month, I’ve lost 5 inches around my waist 😬. I would hate to think taking it in too much would be a mistake too! I’m torn on the whole matter! (Obviously)

They do! I’ll just maybe have to go in with the dress and see what they think. I hear they can be expensive though. My fear being going to someone else, my dress won’t be covered the same way as if they messed up and had to fix it.

Yes that is true, my lady won’t cover a mistake by someone else, but she will honour her own work. If you know you will continue to drop weight then it is something to consider. I would be very torn as well. Although I did lose some weight after I ordered, and the dress is a bit too big right now. I am not worried though. It may cost more in the long run because she has to spend longer removing fabric maybe? But, it would be so much worse if she couldn’t let it out enough (I can’t exchange the size anyways) And what happens in a year from now and it is too small? no one will exchange your dress at that point.......right?

It looks like the chest is the only place that needs it, but yes definitely see what they say about the alterations and what options. You may feel a lot better just knowing what they can do, either way.

I’m not sure. I think I can exchange up to the wedding date? I know this dress can be let out two sizes and taken in two sizes. But you’re right, just talking to the seamstress may bring ease of mind. I wanted to see what others thought first. Thanks for chiming in!
