How many months in advance should a wedding dress be started with alterations? My wedding is November 20th.

What are you looking to have done, and what is your dress made of?

I am having mine taken in, hemmed, straps taken up, underskirts built up bigger, bustle added, sleeves added, plus she is also making my veil, so she said 3 months.

It will also depend on how heavily embellished your dress is. Any of the above things are harder to do when your dress is heavily beaded or covered in sequins etc, and the fabric type can also present challenges - things that stretch like crepe or tulle can make alterations harder. Oh, and finally... the way the dress itself is constructed can make alterations easier/harder - some dresses require the seamstress to basically.... remake them for the alterations to be done. And if it has an underlayer (such as as a slinky dress with a sheer, beaded overlay), the seamstress basically has to do the work two times - on the outer layer and on the inner. If what you are looking at requires something like that, it will take longer to do, obviously.

I'd recommend speaking to a few local people and seeing what they recommend for the time they'd need - also do book up early, I had to book my lady six weeks before my appointment to get in to see her!

I would contact your seamstress and ask them. I heard/read online 2-3 months. So I called around in Sept/Oct and made an appointment for the beginning of November (the last sounded like she thought I was nuts but I insisted!). It was done before Thanksgiving, lol. So I think it’ll depend on where you take it and how busy they are. Like a bridal shop will take longer because they’re busier. But my lady just worked out of her house and wasn’t too busy and was able to do it quickly.

Bought the dress in a different state and left it with my bridesmaid. Started alterations in April for Sep wedding. I know it is early but I haven’t been back since April so we will see how it goes when I go back in Aug for my second fitting.

I'd aim to have your 1st alterations appointment 2-3 months before your wedding!!
