Just Said Yes March 2019

Wedding Florist Exclusivity

Katharine, on September 9, 2018 at 1:52 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

I've just started looking into florists for my wedding next March. The first one I reached out to seemed promising but basically shut me down completely when she saw I was doing ANY DIY with flowers. Our ceremony hall has 22 aisles with hooks for flowers. I made 22 fake flower bouquets just for those assuming I would not be able to afford that many in real flowers (they are nice looking flower bouquets still!). I was really only looking into a florist for my wedding party pieces (bouquets, boutonnieres, etc.) because I don't have a huge budget. I figured I'd add a few decorative arrangements if I could work them in. She basically said my own pieces would be misrepresenting her brand and she doesn't want to be blame if the pieces my "florist friend" (her words) made fell apart. She said her contracts lists that no one else can do anything floral at my wedding, real or fake.

Is this something common? Do I need to be looking into other florist options (like a store front selling generic instead of custom)? I'm just wondering if every florist I reach out to is going to shut me down so fast.

I think that is pretty common. What about getting bouquets from a grocery store?

It may be common in some areas but I wouldnt just give up and settle. I have found quiet a few in my area that encourage DIY or in the very least assume you will do some.

There are still florists out there that will let you DIY. I talked to the florist we'd booked about what I'm planning and she's totally fine with me doing a little DIY. I wound up adding the fresh tulips I want to my floral order, just so I can make my own centerpieces.

I'm also planning on small wreaths to use at the ends of the pews for the ceremony.

    Keep looking.

I understand what the florist is saying, however rudely it seems like she said it.

I would just keep looking for florists. Not every one has that rule.

You may want to check out Sams club or Costco. They have packages and will deliver to you. I ordered mine for less then $400 for brides bouquet, bridesmaids (4), toss bouquet and bouts/corsages.

Common here in SC. All of my vendors said I could only use them and not two different caterers, or two different party supply renters, etc.

I got my flowers from sams.

If you do not have a huge flower budget I will say do all of them DIY.
I am making all my flowers arrangements, bouquets, bouts, center pieces, ceremony, etc the day before the wedding with real flowers from sams and Costco. My budget for flowers is around $500-600 a Florist wanted to charge me $350 just for my bouquet, bouts and coursages with the cheapest flowers like Carnations and around $2,500 for everything.

Us making them with Hydrengias, garden roses, peonies, etc will be around $500-600 for everything we need.

Check with other florists. We did a combination of fake and real without issue. Our florist didn't even ask about it. I know others who have just used a florist for BP bouquets. I would check with others and their policy on this.

I didn't know this was even a policy. I'm getting a crazy amount of flowers from my florist (we have 3 events) but I was thinking of DIY-ing the bridesmaids bouquets with some lavender roses from Costco. Additionally, I'm having my stage decor provide some of the fresh flowers on the stage. I was transparent about my florist with the stage decor vendor and vice versa, and neither seemed to have an issue with two different sources of flowers at the same event.
