Wedding Flowers/Greenery - Oahu, HI

Alexa, on November 5, 2016 at 5:53 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 13

I'm planning my September 2017 wedding in Oahu and am overwhelmed with the price I'm being quoted for flowers for a bouquet and centerpieces! I am totally into the idea of going to a farmers market, buying flowers and making bouquets/centerpieces myself - has anyone done this?? I'm wanting to have mostly ALL greenery - lots of palm leaves, leaves, and a few white flowers sprinkled in here and there, so I wasn't expecting being quoted hundreds of dollars.

Does anyone know of a good flower market or somewhere else to pick up flowers (and mostly greenery)? I've heard Sams Club and Costco can be affordable, reliable options but I'm not sure if they would offer what I'm looking for. I'm definitely not interested in the typical colorful hawaiian flowers that are advertised from florists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hundreds of dollars is actually a good price to cover all of your flowers. Yes, some people DIY their florals, but take it from me - your wedding week is going to be super stressful and the last thing I would want to do is take on a huge project.

I'm also going to be on the island for a full week before the wedding, so I'm not too worried about having to do it last minute. I was being quoted 180+ for the bouquet and about $75 for each small centerpiece... I'm totally not picky about the bouquet and centerpieces looking perfect so I'm confident I would be able to put together something I'm happy with if I were to do it myself (especially with it being mostly greenery!)

Idk but the Sam's and Costco here (I live on Oahu) most likely don't have the flower option. You should check though. Are u going to be on a beach or what?

You can look at Sam's Clubs available wholesale flowers online. I used Fifty Flowers and their flowers were beautiful and fresh. They deliver and they also give free advice on their Facebook page. I did my own flowers. Watch lots of tutorials and practice a bunch! Good luck! ETA - I don't think quotes were unreasonable. It's very stressful to make your own.

I am having my second wedding I. Sept . I always get my mom to do mine. If you know someone crafty you can do them and just buy them fresh yourself

I feel your pain OP. I'm having a destination in Maui and got quoted $60+ for each 4x4'' centerpieces with rose and hydrangea. I'm considering silk flowers now...

Most non-Hawaiian flowers are shipped to the islands and can be very expensive. The wholesale companies I've checked (including Costco and Sam's Club) don't ship to Hawaii, so you'll probably get whatever they have in the store a couple days before your wedding. The uncertainty definitely adds to your stress level.

My family has a place in Kona, HI and whenever we're there, we go to the farmers markets for flowers. They're beautiful and usually about $10 for a LARGE bouquet of assorted flowers. We had originally thought about a Hawaii wedding and that's the route I would've taken. If you have the ability, go to the vendor a week or two before hand and let them know what colors, size, etc you want and most would be happy to make up some bouquets that meet your requests.

Disclaimer: I love the look of the 'natural' Hawaiian flowers. As a PP said, flowers not grown in Hawaii will cost a TON so, if you're good with the ones grown on the island, I highly suggest a local market. I've attached a pic of a marker from when I was there in August.

Thanks Everyone! To clarify, I was quoted those amount based off of Small centerpieces comprised of lots of leaves and just a couple single flowers so I thought that sounded a bit high for what I'm after. I completely understand that typical bouquets and centerpieces composed of flowers are going to be minimum 100+.

I'm wondering if anyone knows of any flower markets in Honolulu that would have a selection of palm leaves, banana leafs, (any kind of greenery!), etc. Even though the traditional bright Hawaiian bouquets are beautiful, I'm looking for lots of dark greens and (any type) of white flower.

I'm now thinking of just setting up an assortment of tall vases with candles for the centerpieces and having a bit of (garland?) wrapped loosely around - just like this photo attached.

Any ideas where I would be able to find something like this?

Contact your venue and ask them. To my (limited) knowledge, I don't know of a lot of white flowers native to Hawaii, except plumeria, which I don't think is the look you're going for.

Alexa - I wanted to do candlescapes for my cocktail tables and was told that it is a common misconception that candles are a lot cheaper than florals. They generally end up running about the same price. So, unless you are providing all the candles and only purchasing the greenery it will probably come out about the same.
