Wedding gift checks - bounced...

Kirst, on September 13, 2012 at 3:46 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 57

How many of you ladies had this issue? How'd you go about it?

We only had 2 that bounced, we were fined for both which is SUPER annoying, but we let both parties know in the nicest way we could. One lady told me ok it should be fine now try & redeposit it....can this even be done?! I mean I guess the bank has it still b/c we dont. The other lady said sorry I'll call my bank and have it handled, this was almost a week ago, no word yet...she said she had canceled that bank account & thought all checks had cleared-which kind of blew my mind...lol o-well

Just curious if anyone has had issues...I've never seen a post about this

I had a friend deal with this too though she didn't share too many details about it with me.

i'm sorry you're dealing with this and that you got charged for them bouncing.

Wow! I've actually never thought or heard of a situation like this, but I'm sure it is quite common. So many people are bad with managing their bank accounts. It really sucks that you have to pay fines for that. Smh.

We received two checks, deposited them Monday following and had no problems. I would be really pi---d off if they had bounced. If you can't afford a wedding gift, don't give one. No biggie. Happy just to have you come. But to give a "gift" that the recipient winds up paying for... there's going to be an issue.

Yes, you can ask the bank to rerun the checks. If they don't clear, you have to pay your bank back and collect the money from the check writer yourself. It sucks but being that the bank fronted the funds when the checks were deposited, they stupidly hold you accountable. Good luck. Btw, its your discretion to rerun them, you run the risk of them being nsf again and being doubly charged the fine.

OUCH! Sucks that this has happened. If their banks are local, I would suggest taking the checks there to be cashed. That way you can eliminate any fees to your own bank account if the money is not there.

Also if you end up collecting yourself, you need to get copies of the checks, type a letter to the bouncer stating the nsf check, # of check, amount of check and your fee which is the overdraft fee. Send it certified mail. They have ten business days from the date of receipt of the letter to make the check good meaning to pay you in cash or money order only which needs to be stated in the letter. Also enclose a copy of the bounced check. If they fail to comply, you file it with your constable/Judge for your precinct in your county. They will take it from there. Most likely issue a letter to collect with the same ten days, after that, they issue a warrant for arrest.

I went to a wedding once as someone's date and he accidentally forgot to sign the check. The bride sent a nice thank you note for his attempted gift with the check back and he signed it and sent it back to her. I guess you've already done everything you can in being calm and polite to them. Sorry it totally sucks!

    Yikes!

The fine really sucks. I would hope if someone knows you had to pay a fine that they would make every effort to pay you that fine money, take you for lunch, some kind of gesture. But......realistically, if someone is disorganized like that to begin with, I wouldn't hold my breath that would happen. I would probably just not even try to re-clear it unless the giver really followed up about it. Sorry. Smiley sad

How much were the checks? Just out of curiosity.

My MOH was telling me a story very similar to Tatyana's... for their wedding they received a VERY generous check, but it wasn't signed. Because it was a friend of her husbands, he suggested just signing it and depositing it... pretty sure thats not legal. She actually never did anything about... I've been guilty of forgetting to bring a gift in once... I had to drop it off at their house the next week, and I felt like such a schmuck!

Omg..i would never try and issue an arrest for someones bounced check at my wedding..would it be annoying-yes.would i be mad-maybe a little frustrated..but i would call them and explain what happened..if it still didnt help i would just write it off as well they are flakey or maybe they are having hard time..but i would NOT ever even consider calling the cops.

1st that sucks major... Do you mind me asking how much? Cause i think thats super crazy! Plus How embarassing on the guest part!. & I would def. contact the bank and fight for the nsf fee. It's not your fault and i'm sure if you tell them that it was for your wedding that cases like this usually don't happen. They should either take care of it or only have you pay for 1 in courtesy...

Warrent for their arrest? Really?? I think that is taking it a bit far. After all, it was supposed to be a gift, not a bill.

It really sucks this happened. It is actually something that never crossed my mind. I am sure it is super embarrassing for both parties. Good luck, I hope it gets taken care of!

Thats what the judge would do. If she can afford to write it off great, if not those are the steps to take. It is against the law to write a hot check. The law does not recognize hardship. It sucks and honestly idk if I would go that route either, just providing the course of action.

HAHA i would NEVER write a certified letter and call cops on family or friends over a check lol...i may just write it off as a loss im not that worried about it. I just didnt want a call asking me if i deposited it yet...so i figured id be nice let them know it bounced and we were fined and maybe they'd try to rewrite a check...@kris they were for $200 and $300

Yea it's just the annoyance factor & the wow factor...it makes me feel awkward to tell a guest their gift check bounced lol...i mean idk it seems like rude of me to say anything bc it was a gift so it doesnt mean they HAD to give it at all, but then the fact i have to pay the fine...just awkward for me is all...wanted to see if anyone else had this issue at all.

Wow. What were you fined, like $35 for each check or something?

That really sucks. I mean, stuff happens, nobody's perfect, I've bounced a check before, although thankfully not in a situation like this. Smiley smile

Doesn't everybody have overdraft protection these days? Sheesh. lol.

Geeze! Here's the thing- I KNOW that I'm not that great at managing my bank account or remembering what checks I have outstanding out there. So if I'm giving a monetary wedding gift, I give cash! Why is that so difficult?
