How many of you ladies had this issue? How'd you go about it? We only had 2 that bounced, we were fined for both which is SUPER annoying, but we let both parties know in the nicest way we could. One lady told me ok it should be fine now try & redeposit it....can this even be done?! I mean I guess...

We only had 2 that bounced, we were fined for both which is SUPER annoying, but we let both parties know in the nicest way we could. One lady told me ok it should be fine now try & redeposit it....can this even be done?! I mean I guess the bank has it still b/c we dont. The other lady said sorry I'll call my bank and have it handled, this was almost a week ago, no word yet...she said she had canceled that bank account & thought all checks had cleared-which kind of blew my mind...lol o-well

Just curious if anyone has had issues...I've never seen a post about this

If I were you, I'd ask for proof before running them again just because I wouldn't want to be fined again. Or, just tell them you appreciate their efforts in fixing this through their banks, but if they could provide cash at some point that would the best option to ensure you don't get a double fine for the check.

I didn't have this issue, but a lot of guests from my side addressed it to my new married name, and I hadn't changed my name yet. I told my bank the situation and brought in the marriage license but explained that my name wasn't legally changed yet so I didn't want to change it on my bank account yet. Luckily, they were accomodating...

I don`t know if Kasey understands that it is a wedding gift cheque that is being talked about here.

That`s crazy that you are the one that has to pay for a bounced cheque, should it not be the owner of the cheque that gets charged for not having the funds

Please understand that I was in no way telling you that you had to do that. I was just informing you on the steps to take in case. I probably would write it off as well. I agree and understand the awkwardness involved. I would probably let them know and send it back with a thank you.

Krystal I understood. I agree I think its nuts the bank charges you and not the writer.

You should. It sucks and they should pay for it. Big time. Ha ha.

Anyway, just wanted to say I'm sorry. We didn't have the problem but it must be uber annoying. But I can't believe people don't know the check hasn't cleared... I mean how many wedding gift checks are they writing?

    @Maggie - WORD.

There's pros and cons to both - we've had an envelope with cash go missing before and we felt soooooo bad, we gave another gift. If it had been a check, we could have stopped payment and rewrote it. But then again, if we had had a check in there, someone could have gotten a hold of our bank account info and routing number.

It's just so random, Kirst. You know these people, right? Are they generally flaky? Not that you would necessarily know if they're disorganized with it, but do they have money to spend? Did they RSVP on time? lol.

I actually did this to a friend by mistake. wrote out a check for her wedding and forgot I did it. I felt really bad about making the check bounce I told her to stop by my house and I gave her cash and added the fees into that. I normally dont write checks.

but sometimes mistakes happen especially if you waited till after your HM to cash them.

also take the check to the person bank that way you know if there is money in the account or not and you dont get fined

Ugh what a pain! That's not only uncomfortable and inconvenient for you, but embarrasing for them! My sister wrote us a hefty check and jsut asked that we give her a heads up to when we were going to cash it cause she knew we wouldn't be getting to a bank right away. Fair enough.

I'm cuprised people write checks at all anymore.

My Matron of Honor shared with me when she got married a few of her DH guest brought dates which they wrote a check for at the reception. Well the wedding was on a Sunday and on Monday morning when her mom went to deposit the money for her, the checks bounced. it was quite a few of them. She got charged fees and 6 years later, she still never got any money from them or an apology. It's sad that it can be that way when it comes to money.

You can also call the bank to verify that the funds are indeed available in the account. Then deposit that same day. I would be more inclined to simple return the NSF check in card to the sender. If they chose to resend another one to deposit or sent another gift, then fine. If another check is presented, then call before making the deposit.

I'm sorry this happened to you. It creates such an uncomfortable situation for both parties.

Some people just don't monitor their checking accounts very closely, especially if they have multiple accounts where they keep their assets. We had an aunt write a birthday check to my younger brother and it bounced. She is quite well off, but she had just paid a contractor for some home repairs, so that had drained most of the working cash she had in her account. She was so embarrassed, and my parents felt awkward making the call to tell her.

I would ask the bank to give you a refund if possible. I work at a bank, and unfortunately I see people get bad checks from people all the time. If you talked to the writer of the check (the first gal) and she said its ok to redeposit, you bank should send you back the check and it is a legal copy that you can deposit. OR she can give you a new check.

Such a bummer. If I were them, I would be super embarrassed.

I am sorry you have to go through this. As a guest, I would be mortified. As the bride, I would be pissed that I had to pay the fees.

I don't think I would ever contact the guest and discuss.

I honestly would contact the bank and yell about the fees. They may remove them, after all, it's not YOUR check you deposited.

YOU have to pay the fee if it bounces? Wouldn't the person who wrote the check have to pay since they didn't have the money to cover the check?
