Wedding gown woes... ideas on what to do with it?

Stacey, on February 4, 2020 at 7:16 PM Posted in Married Life 0 18
Hello! Just got married in January and getting settled after the honeymoon and I keep running in to my gown in the closet. I’m having a hard time processing the thought of getting it preserved and sitting in my closet like countless brides before me. Did anyone have any good ideas for alternative uses for their gown? Thanks!

You could sell it so another bride can enjoy it too.
Or keep it and have it turned into a christening gown for your children. Or confirmation dress if you have a daughter.
Donate it and have it made into burial dresses for babies who die at birth.

I'm altering mine into a cocktail dress and using part of the excess in a couple of craft projects. I can't justify the expense of the dress to just sit in my closet for the rest of time.

You could do a trash the dress photo session. Donate it or sell.

You could sell the dress. I have mine posted to sell. Spent hundreds of dollars for a piece that I will only wear once, so discount it and try to make somebody else happy!

My mom has her dress made into baby bassinet skirting. A ring bearer pillow and tooth fairy pillows. She wanted little heirlooms to pass on no matter if you have boys or girls. She also has leftover fabric for me to wrap in my bouquet.

I decided to not have mine preserved and to have it altered/re-designed at a later time into a dress that I could wear again. My husband and I are also going to do a photo shoot some time this year in our wedding attire (a calmer, non wrecking version of wreck the dress) so I am not doing anything with it until after that. I will not be having kids to pass it down to and really no reason to hold onto it as a wedding dress other than the fact right now that I am still attached to it lol. My reception dress will stay just as it is. It is a more casual version of my wedding dress so I can already wear it as it is now to future events.

I chose a dress that I could wear again. I'm having it dyed a blush pink so I can wear it to a cocktail party or black tie event. It's perfect for spring and it's dreamy when the wind is blowing so I'm excited for another opportunity to wear it!

You can use it as a Halloween costume at some point aha. But I do like the idea of getting it altered into a more wearable dress on another occasion.

I don't know what I'm doing with mine yet (haven't gotten that far in the planning process!), but my mom is donating hers to a local group in Western NY that re-purposes wedding gowns into little outfits for babies who die at birth. This same group made the gown for the still-birth baby she had before me, and she wants to support them, but they get so many donations that she hasn't had a chance to give her dress to them (even after almost 30 years). Her dress is at my grandma's house, and we're a military family, so timing just hasn't worked out yet for when they're accepting dresses & when my grandma is able to get it to them. I'm hoping that she'll be able to soon though.

That would be a wonderful thing to do but my dress is basically all glitter. I don’t feel that would be an appropriate attire for such an occasion. I’m glad to know that’s out there to let my friends know! Thank you!

A friend of mine is planning on cutting hers up and making it into a shadow box to hang in her living room so it's displayed.

I love this idea, I have my dress in a bag in the closet doing nothing but I love it so much I don't want to get rid of it.
