Wedding Hair Disaster

Caitlin, on July 20, 2021 at 11:16 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16
Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice. I recently got married on July 10 and my hair and make up lady was late. Because she was late she had to rush my hair. It ended up falling out right after the church and by the time our first dance came around it just looked so knotty and messy. I’m so worried about my wedding pictures that were taken in between the church and the reception. I don’t want to be annoying or tell photographers how to do their job but I was wondering if I should reach out to them and explain how upset I am just looking at candid photos from my guest on my hair situation. I was wondering if they were able to edit my hair somehow but like I said I don’t want to tell them how to their job. As for the person who did my hair, that’s a completely different story and I’m very torn about the review that I should leave for her.

I think it’s worth asking the photographer. I don’t think it’s telling them how to do their job. If they can’t do it, they’ll let you know.
Now regarding the review, I think you should say exactly what you said here. She was late, rushed your hair, which means that your hairstyle didn’t hold. It’s factual and that’s what a review should be.
Honestly, being late is extremely unprofessional so other brides should know about that.

Thank you!! I’m going to give them a call tomorrow then and see what they say. I’m so worried about my pictures and it’s obviously not their fault, they were fantastic. And you’re right, I do have to let other brides be aware of what happened.

It's funny, I was just telling my fiance how crazy it was how much more of a premium MU/Hair artists charge for weddings, but assumed it was for the assurance that all runs smoothly on the big day. So if all did not run smoothly, then that's really bad. So sorry that happened!

Regarding the photographer, maybe you can ask for one or two preview photos so you can see generally how they turned out. Sometimes just professional cameras and lighting that the photographers know how to capture can do wonders. If you're still not happy then you can mention that to her, I think that's fine. However, some photographers might charge for extra editing, depending on your contract.

    Good luck!

You can absolutely ask your photographer to edit your photos. It's part of what they do. They'll charge you a small fee.

Yes! I paid so much money AND a girl dropped out so I had to cover her as well due to the contract and yet she couldn’t be there on time to do what I paid for. I’m very upset at the moment. And thank you!

Oh my goodness I’m sure you looked amazing regardless but I’m definitely going to reach out today. I actually never thought about a fee. Thank you!

Have you checked your contract with your hairstylist regarding them being late? I would honestly call and make a claim that since they were late and rushed through your hair it wasn’t satisfactory and ask for them to cover any costs that may accrue from asking for photo edits.

Just had an idea- realistically, there’s probably only going be like 5 or so photos that you’re going to be looking at regularly. Maybe once you choose those then you can be more lenient on the editing budget for those instead of feeling like you need to edit the whole suite of photos. Could help save $!

I'm a photographer. Editing hair is possible but because an updo/half-updo that falls out would typically have an inconsistent texture/pattern it can be very time consuming, and a variety of factors will play into whether or not it can be done successfully, including the hair style and color, background, lighting, photographer editing skill level, and more. I would expect this to be time consuming and expensive, and it could potentially delay how long it takes for you to get your photos back and also add significantly to the cost. Changing someone's hair style is significantly more work than fixing a double chin or removing a stain from a dress.

I would recommend letting the photographer know about your concern but NOT asking for any additional edits to be done until you see the actual photos themselves. If you hate them, what will most likely make the most sense and be the most cost effective is to pick the photos you like best and want to print/display and have those edited, vs paying your photographer to edit your hair in hundreds of photos, half of which you don't even care about. I would also ask for a "sample edit" of one or two shots before paying to have them edit a whole bunch of them, because it might turn out that they aren't very good at that type of edit or that the hair was so bad the photographs cannot be improved to the point that it is satisfactory to you to be worth the cost.

I would also absolutely leave the HMUA a very honest and critical review. Showing up late is unprofessional and her doing so negatively impacted your wedding in an emotional and expensive way. Other brides should absolutely be warned of this behavior and how it might impact their wedding before they consider hiring this woman. You don't need to be nasty about it, but you also should not sugarcoat anything.

Yikes so she was so late that she had to rush your hair even though someone dropped out which should have opened up more time for her?? I would absolutely leave an honest and critical review because as a bride that would really help during my planning. Remember reviews are really to help the consumer make informed decisions not to help get more clients for the business, that is just a happy consequence from good reviews. I would also call her and ask for a partial refund, if nothing else you deserve a refund for the additional person you paid for that dropped out since usually that part of a contract is so that the artist doesn't waste her time when someone drops and she clearly did not leave enough time to take care of another person if she rushed through the bride.

I can't speak much to the photographer edits but I would say it's worth the ask. Also you could ask for editing pricing first so you have a number to bring back to the stylist of additional costs incurred due to her sub par work. Kari had the best advice on the editing.

Yea it was a nightmare. So her team was there to do my bridesmaids at the time they were allotted. She booked another bride the same day and was with her before coming to me which hurt me even more because I booked her a year and half before my wedding!

Wow I'm so sorry that happened to you! Yes, ask the photographer to fix it for sure. As far as the review goes, be honest but not emotional.
