Wedding hair

Kathleen, on August 30, 2020 at 3:51 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 11
Has anyone used a cosmetology school to do the bridal party’s hair for their wedding? There’s a couple around me that do styling and updos at a really good price and the pictures look good online, but I wasn’t sure if the quality would be worth it. Not looking to break the bank on hair

It's an option to look into if you're on a budget. Be aware that it won't be perfect unless you request an experienced student, but all of them require instructor supervision. Get a trial and see what you think before you decide as you would with a professional.

I agree with pp - it sounds like a cool opportunity but the results may not be as you’d expect

The thing with cosmotology schools is you get who you get the day of I believe. You could get someone that is not that expertise or good with that. I have had people that want to be barbers learning to style a females hair and struggled. I say regardless of what you do get a trial and make sure you get the same person day of. For my wedding, I would spend the money and get a professional.

As long as they are still a student (they typically are doing hair on customers outside of the classroom the majority of their term) you can absolutely make a follow-up appointment with a specific student you liked. It's commonly done. They will only match you up with a random student if you are a walk-in who doesn't know anyone specifically.

Get a trial and see if you want to stick with them or go with a professional.

That’s a good idea, requesting the same student. Something I need to call and ask questions about for sure. It’s a little early to schedule something, but yes a trial would be necessary no matter what direction I choose to go. Definitely on a budget for hair. I plan on paying for that for the bridal party. Thanks!

I’ve used them for formal events and had great success. Honestly, I think they sometimes listen better and are more willing to make adjustments to meet you vision than some experienced stylists who assume they understand after 1 inspo pic! You can definitely call ahead and ask for someone nearing the end of their program (is more experience) and who likes doing whatever style you are looking for (loose curls, updos, etc).
Then if you like them rebook for the actual wedding. The only other thing to caution on is that they often take a LOT longer than the pros (like >2 hrs for simple updo) so you may need to allocate more time in your day.

I'd focus on you and diy everyone else...

Your bm hair being off is one thing but yours is more complicated and more photographed. My bm wore their hair down with little to no make up and they looked fine. I gave them environmental things they needed to know and then told them it's diy (it's windy / we're outside / etc)
Bridal hair and makeup has a tendency to be the hardest for most because most want it to look like there isn't any. Plus most people never wear a veil or consider the wind factor and how to secure it to your head. We had to use veil weights so it didn't fly in my face.
So, I recommend having yours done by the best you can.

I was the MOH in a wedding and we all went to a school and got our hair done the day of the wedding. It turned out great! The instructors are there to help and they will fix anything that needs fixed. I would just make sure that you have plenty of time because it does usually take longer!

That’s really helpful information! Thank you! Did you have any issues requesting specific people to do the hair?

Not at all! We made appointments about 3 weeks in advance and picked who we wanted (it was a small-ish town so we picked people we went to high school with lol). There was no problems and it went smoothly! I loved the atmosphere of us all getting it done at once and getting to sit and talk and stuff. It was a lot of fun!
