Wedding insurance covering Covid/flu?

Sarah, on August 16, 2023 at 6:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 2

Hi all! My wedding is in Dallas in January 2024, and I'm looking to buy cancellation insurance. All the policies I've seen cover extreme weather and "illness or injury," but explicitly do NOT cover "infectious diseases"... Has anyone found a policy that does? My worst nightmare (other than a snowpocalypse!) is that my fiance and I get COVID or the flu and have to cancel the wedding to avoid getting our whole families sick, and on top of that, lose a ton of money. Eek!

There probably isn't going to be one. We looked for our 2022 wedding, and I have a friend that looked recently as well. Most will only cover if there is some kind of mandate about not having events.

The way it was explained to me was Covid/minor illness/etc are argued as preventable (ie, you can just stay home, wear masks, etc) to prevent getting it. So if you aren't taking those precautions all insurance will view that as your fault for not being cautious. Same as if you get a cold or sinus infection.

It was more of a concern when I got married, so we quarantined ourselves for 10 days before our wedding and literally didn't hang out with friends or go out to eat, work from an office, or anything until our rehearsal dinner, where we asked everyone attending to take a covid test before coming.

Yeah, I think it’s become very common for insurers to leave out covid. There have been some notable concert cancellations in the news recently, and some of them have vague language in the announcement about the artists being sick and unable to sing and doctor’s orders for vocal rest blah blah. And it’s because if they say they have covid, their insurance won’t cover it.
